While the royal family rolled out the red carpet for him in all its forms, it was his reaction to meeting Kate Middleton, who welcomed him alongside Prince William, that attracted all the attention.

The invitation, delivered in person by the British Prime Minister on behalf of the King, had been described as “really special” and “unprecedented”.

As soon as he stepped out of the helicopter, Trump greeted Prince William and then complimented Kate Middleton, remarks that were immediately described as awkward, and which provoked massive reactions on social networks.

Shaking hands with her, Trump reportedly quipped to the Princess of Wales:

“You’re beautiful, so beautiful.”

A central role

During this historic state visit, Kate Middleton played a central role alongside the royal family. She welcomed Donald and Melania Trump as they arrived in Windsor, alongside Prince William, before taking part in the carriage procession and official ceremonies.

Kate Middleton is also due to share an official moment with Melania Trump as part of the state visit.

Their joint appearance is scheduled at Frogmore Gardens, at an event with the Scouts and the “Squirrels” program.

The event, part of the visit’s program, will highlight education and community involvement, and will be one of the rare occasions when the Princess of Wales and the First Lady of the United States will appear side by side in a public setting.

A grand welcome

After the high-profile trade with Kate Middleton, Donald Trump was welcomed to Windsor by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, accompanied by Prince William.

A solemn ceremony followed: royal salute, inspection of the guard, then a carriage ride around the estate. The President and First Lady Melania took part in an exhibition of the Royal Collection in the Green Drawing Room, then made their way to St. George’s Chapel to lay a wreath on the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II.

The first day ended with an official luncheon, diplomatic talks and a state banquet in the evening. But the atmosphere remained tense due to another highlight: the unfurling of a huge banner depicting Trump alongside Epstein near the castle, as well as projections of images on the walls of Windsor itself, recalling their controversial links.
