Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych was disqualified from the Winter Olympics in Italy after officials ruled that his helmet honoring athletes killed in the war with Russia violated «a prohibition on political speech» during competition.

The helmet featured portraits of 21 Ukrainian athletes who died in Russian attacks, a tribute Heraskevych insisted was about remembrance, not politics. IOC President Kirsty Coventry met with him shortly before the race but no compromise was reached. «There are things more important than medals,» Heraskevych said. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the decision, calling the helmet a reminder of «the cost of fighting for independence.»
