Shoplifting just got a little harder at Walmart. This customer was shocked to see the store's recent trick on an item. Was it really necessary?
Michelle Wallace (@libragang696) caught the newest anti-theft measure in a North Carolina store.
“Ya'll, when Walmart start locking up the EOS lotions? Oh wow. Cruddy little net-sack,” Wallace says while laughing.
They show an EOS lotion bottle hanging from a metal net bag. The metal net bag is the new anti-theft security feature.
“#NotToday” Wallace captions the video with over 803,000 likes and 6,100,000 views.
People coped with humor
Folks in the comments were quick to make jokes about the net bag.
“I waited 35 minutes for a plan B and I told the manager if I wait any longer I'm going to get pregnant,” one comment said.
“Comes with a african net sponge,” another person joked.
“Was the glass case not an option anymore,” another person asked.
“Not me thinking it was EOS ornaments,” someone else wrote.
“They do this to prevent stealing but what they don't realize is it also deters actual shoppers too because I'm not about to wait for an associate to show up to uncage the lotion. I will leave,” a different comment pointed out.
It's Not Just The EOS Lotion
Turns out, this is being used on a range of products—not just on lotions. A recent Fox News report shows meat at Walmart with the metal net around it.
“Walmart locks up steaks to combat shoplifting,” the headline reads. In the video, a woman shows the steaks in the net and says, “This when you know its bad, when they put miniature gates to make sure you don't steal their meat. Girl, this got to be bad,” says the woman.
Another store notorious for locking items up is Walgreens. Ironically enough, but to no surprise, Walgreens has shared that locking items up has hurt sales.
“When you lock things up, for example, you don't sell as many of them. We've kind of proven that pretty conclusively,” the CEO of Walgreens, Tim Wentworth, said.
Some customers don't want to wait for an employee to come and open it up to purchase something. However, Walgreens has decided to still lock a good portion of their items up until they find a better way to combat theft.
