Putin-Linked Russian Oligarch Reportedly Paid for Donald Trump Jr.’s Lavish Bahamas Wedding Celebrations

An investigation by ProPublica has revealed that Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, who has close ties to Vladimir Putin, paid for significant parts of lavish Bahamas celebrations involving Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson. The revelation immediately attracted attention because Kremlev is a prominent Russian figure with connections reaching into Putin’s political circle.

Trump Jr. and Anderson legally married in West Palm Beach, Florida, on May 21, 2026, shortly before the Memorial Day gathering. Anderson stressed on Instagram that the actual ceremony was separate from the Bahamas festivities: «Don and I got married privately on Friday, surrounded ONLY by our family. It was intimate, deeply personal and one of the most beautiful days of our lives.»

Anderson disputed the characterization of the entire three-day Bahamas gathering as their wedding celebration. According to her, the trip existed before their marriage plans changed. «The weekend that followed had actually been planned well in advance as a fun weekend with friends. It was never intended to be our wedding weekend», she wrote while responding to the ProPublica report.

The timing nevertheless meant Trump Jr. and Anderson arrived in the Bahamas shortly after becoming husband and wife. Anderson explained: «When our original wedding plans changed, we simply decided to get married before it and arrived at an already planned weekend as newlyweds.» The distinction became central to her effort to clarify the circumstances surrounding Kremlev’s involvement.

According to records obtained by ProPublica, expenses associated with the luxurious gathering ran into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Kremlev reportedly covered major elements, including one of two private islands used during the festivities and an elaborate fireworks display. Anderson did not deny his generosity, instead publicly confirming that he personally hosted celebrations for the newlyweds.

«Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding», Anderson wrote on Instagram. She characterized Kremlev’s contribution not as something political, but as an exceptionally generous present from a friend, calling it «an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful.»

Kremlev’s identity makes that gift particularly noteworthy. He leads the International Boxing Association, which has received major financial backing from Russian state-controlled energy giant Gazprom. Shortly before the celebrations, Putin awarded Kremlev Russia’s Order of Friendship. Kremlev later traveled to China as part of an official Russian delegation accompanying Putin, further highlighting his connections to the Kremlin.

ProPublica reported that Kremlev attended the roughly 50-person Bahamas gathering with a sizable entourage of other Russian figures, reportedly surprising some guests. Kremlev and his group were largely absent from photographs subsequently shared by the couple on social media, although part of Kremlev’s face could reportedly be spotted in one large group photograph from the festivities.

President Donald Trump did not attend his son’s wedding or the Bahamas festivities, instead remaining in Washington as his administration confronted pressing international issues. Asked about his absence, Trump pointed to his presidential responsibilities and told reporters: «I have a thing called Iran and other things.» The president was therefore not among the guests celebrating with Kremlev.

Anderson strongly rejected suggestions that Kremlev’s generosity necessarily carried political significance. «Friendship doesn’t require a political motive», she wrote. She followed with: «Generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda.» Then she added: «And sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift.» Anderson said the couple would not be «embarrassed or apologetic» about their international friendships.

Anderson concluded with an emphatic response to the scrutiny: «NO CONSPIRACY , NO MYSTERY.» She described the events as «Just a private family wedding, a wonderful weekend with friends and one hell of a party». Her response confirms Kremlev’s substantial hospitality while rejecting ProPublica’s broader framing of the Putin-connected Russian businessman’s involvement as politically significant.
