Macklemore Pledges $1 Million to Palestinians as Ed Sheeran Tour Controversy Goes On

What began as a bitter controversy over Macklemore’s removal from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour has unexpectedly evolved into a multimillion-dollar humanitarian aid effort. Macklemore announced that he will donate the entire $1 million in net earnings he received from the tour to organizations directly supporting Palestinians, shifting attention from the touring dispute toward the humanitarian crisis.

Macklemore, whose real name is Ben Haggerty, said his $1 million will be divided among six organizations: Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, HEAL Palestine, Gaza Soup Kitchen, Medical Aid for Palestinians, UNRWA USA National Committee and Anera. He described the donation as an attempt to redirect the conversation toward Palestinians rather than himself or the controversy.

In his Instagram statement, Macklemore also publicly challenged New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft to match his contribution. «And I invite Robert Kraft to match my donation,» he wrote. Macklemore added, «Whatever we disagree about, perhaps we can agree on this: Palestinian lives are worth protecting. A Palestinian life is no less valuable than any other life on this earth.»

The dispute erupted following Macklemore’s performances during Sheeran’s tour at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Wearing a keffiyeh, the rapper declared «Free Palestine» and performed «Hind’s Hall,» his protest song criticizing Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. During his remarks, Macklemore also sought to distinguish his criticism of the Israeli government from criticism directed at Jewish people.

Robert Kraft subsequently opposed Macklemore performing at Gillette Stadium, which is owned by Kraft’s business organization. Kraft’s objections centered on what he characterized as Macklemore’s history of rhetoric and imagery offensive to the Jewish community. Macklemore later alleged that Kraft played a broader role in encouraging other stadium owners to object to his continued presence on Sheeran’s tour.

With objections emerging from multiple venues, tour promoter Messina Touring Group ultimately removed Macklemore from most of his remaining U.S. appearances. Sheeran maintained that he had not personally made the decision. According to Macklemore, Sheeran contacted him and said he «did not take sides» while wanting his concerts to represent «unity, joy, escapism and love.»

Macklemore’s removal produced another wave of fallout when several supporting performers withdrew from scheduled appearances. FINNEAS, Lukas Graham, Beoga and Aaron Rowe were among the artists who pulled out following the decision. Their departures expanded the controversy beyond Macklemore, Sheeran and venue operators, turning the dispute into a larger issue affecting the tour’s supporting lineup.

Then came an unexpected revelation from Kraft. In a public statement responding to the controversy, the billionaire said Sheeran had contacted him before Macklemore issued his challenge. According to Kraft, Sheeran asked him to «commit $2 million to match his donation to aid in the region to fight this humanitarian crisis,» revealing a separate humanitarian effort already underway.

Kraft said Sheeran also intended to approach other venue owners about contributing. «Ed now plans to reach out to other venue owners and our goal is to continue to work together to build bridges,» Kraft wrote. His statement additionally highlighted previous initiatives he said were intended to create opportunities and relationships involving young Palestinians and Israelis.

Kraft’s statement indicates that Sheeran had committed a $2 million donation and wanted Kraft to match it, but important details remain unclear. Sheeran has not separately announced the donation or identified its recipients. Kraft’s statement describes the money as humanitarian «aid in the region» rather than explicitly saying that all of the additional funds will exclusively benefit Palestinians or Gaza.

Macklemore, meanwhile, left no ambiguity about his own contribution. His $1 million is specifically designated for organizations supporting Palestinians. «That is what this has always been about. Not me. Not a tour. Not the headlines or the controversy,» he wrote. Urging supporters to remain engaged after attention fades, Macklemore concluded: «When the news cycle moves on, which it will, don’t move with it.»
