An OpenAI engineer has been arrested by the FBI after two secret recording devices were discovered at company offices, including one allegedly hidden behind a TV to capture confidential executive meetings.
FBI Arrests OpenAI Engineer Over Secret Recording Devices
A Saudi Arabian engineer employed by OpenAI has been arrested by the FBI after two recording devices were discovered at the company’s San Francisco offices. Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, was taken into custody on October 9, 2026, accused of secretly attempting to record confidential executive meetings involving sensitive artificial intelligence research and corporate operations.
DOJ Reveals Alleged Surveillance of OpenAI Executives
Federal prosecutors unsealed a criminal complaint against Alfozan on October 13, alleging that he installed a concealed recording device in a conference room frequently used by OpenAI executives. The engineer, who joined the company in July 2025, allegedly targeted discussions involving proprietary AI technology, upcoming products, strategic business decisions and government partnerships.
First Recording Device Discovered Hidden Behind Television
OpenAI security personnel discovered the first device on September 30, connected to a USB port behind a television inside an executive conference room. According to federal investigators, the equipment was concealed in toilet paper and contained encrypted data. Prosecutors believe the device was installed approximately two days earlier, on September 28, without authorization.
Second Recording Device Found in Engineer's Bag
A second recording device was discovered on October 5 inside an unattended bag belonging to Alfozan at another OpenAI office location. Security personnel also found his wallet and identification inside the bag. Although the second recorder resembled the first, prosecutors have not established publicly that it had been installed or used to intercept conversations.
Surveillance Footage Allegedly Links Engineer to Conference Room
Investigators reviewed security footage allegedly showing Alfozan entering or approaching restricted meeting areas without authorization. On October 5, cameras reportedly captured him entering the executive conference room and looking behind the television where the first device had been discovered. Prosecutors believe the footage supports allegations that he was involved in placing the concealed equipment.
Sensitive AI Research and Government Partnerships Potentially Targeted
The conference room allegedly targeted by the engineer regularly hosted confidential discussions involving OpenAI leadership. According to the federal complaint, meetings covered proprietary AI research, unreleased technologies, commercial partnerships and relationships with government agencies. However, investigators have not publicly established whether sensitive conversations were successfully recorded, accessed remotely or transmitted to another individual.
Chatbot Searches Allegedly Reveal Recording Device Research
Federal investigators also identified chatbot inquiries allegedly connected to the surveillance operation. An account associated with Alfozan’s wife reportedly contained searches about concealing recording devices, encrypted storage, Wi-Fi connectivity and remote audio access. Some inquiries referenced technical characteristics of the recovered equipment. Authorities have not accused his wife of participating in any wrongdoing.
OpenAI Uses Its Own AI Models to Investigate
OpenAI revealed that its artificial intelligence models helped examine the suspicious equipment and identify a possible suspect. «We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier.» The company subsequently fired Alfozan and referred its findings to federal authorities.
OpenAI Says No Evidence of Stolen AI Technology
Despite the discovery of two recorders, OpenAI says its investigation has not identified evidence of stolen proprietary technology or customer information. «At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data.» The company continues cooperating with the FBI’s investigation into the alleged surveillance activities.
FBI Raises National Security Concerns Over Alleged Surveillance
Federal prosecutors characterized the allegations as a national security concern because of OpenAI’s role in developing advanced artificial intelligence systems. U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian emphasized the importance of protecting American technological innovation. Although Alfozan is a Saudi national, investigators have not identified any foreign government as directing the alleged operation or receiving confidential information.
Engineer Faces Five Years in Prison as Investigation Continues
Alfozan faces federal charges involving the alleged interception of private communications, carrying a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. His detention hearing is scheduled for October 19. Investigators have not determined publicly whether recordings were obtained or shared. The engineer remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
