Elon Musk is returning to the Trump administration little more than a year after his explosive feud with Trump ended his first stint in government. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has tapped the billionaire to co-lead Project Meridian, a 120-day Pentagon initiative focused on the «future of warfare». Musk will now help identify emerging technologies and weapons the U.S. military could need to fight conflicts decades from today.
Musk Returns to Government
Elon Musk is returning to the Trump administration in a new Pentagon advisory role, little more than a year after leaving government amid an extraordinary public rupture with Trump. His return places the billionaire back inside the administration, but this time with a narrowly focused mission: helping the Pentagon determine how the United States could fight wars decades from now.
An Explosive Break With Trump
Their 2025 feud reached its peak when Musk dropped what he called a «really big bomb» involving the Jeffrey Epstein files. Musk wrote on X: «Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!» He later deleted the post.
A New Pentagon Assignment
More than a year later, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has brought Musk back into government to co-lead Project Meridian. Announced during Hegseth’s «State of the Force» address at Marine Corps Base Quantico, the Pentagon initiative will examine the «future of warfare» and identify weapons and emerging technologies American forces could require on battlefields decades into the future.
Three High-Profile Leaders
Musk will work alongside Anduril Industries founder Palmer Luckey and former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich under the Pentagon’s technology leadership. Hegseth described them as «three of our nation’s best minds». The group has been given an accelerated 120-day timetable, intended to avoid the lengthy bureaucratic reviews traditionally associated with major Pentagon planning projects.
From Underground to Space
Hegseth described Project Meridian as «futuristic on purpose», saying it will «study the battlefields of the future». Its mandate stretches across emerging military domains, from subterranean environments to the cislunar frontier and beyond. Artificial intelligence, autonomous weapons, robotics, drones and advanced space technologies are expected to feature prominently as the group examines future American military requirements.
Potential Conflicts Draw Attention
The appointments also create potential conflict-of-interest questions. Musk’s SpaceX has extensive government and military business, while Luckey’s Anduril develops autonomous defense technologies and holds Pentagon contracts. Both executives will now help examine future military needs in areas where companies connected to them could potentially compete for government spending. The Pentagon has not publicly detailed how such potential conflicts will be managed.
From DOGE to a Public Feud
Musk’s new assignment differs sharply from his first government role. He entered Trump’s second administration as the public face of the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, pursuing sweeping reductions in federal spending and staffing. His relationship with Trump deteriorated after Musk criticized the administration’s major tax-and-spending legislation, arguing that it undermined DOGE’s efforts to reduce government spending.
Musk Walks Away From Washington
The policy disagreement quickly became a personal and highly public confrontation, with Musk and Trump exchanging attacks as their relationship collapsed. Musk subsequently stepped away from government work and said he would redirect his attention toward companies including Tesla and SpaceX. Their relationship gradually improved afterward, eventually creating the conditions for Musk’s unexpected return to the administration in a different capacity.
Hegseth Reshapes the Pentagon
Project Meridian forms part of a much broader military restructuring announced by Hegseth. The Pentagon plans to establish a four-star Autonomous Warfare Command focused on rapidly expanding robotic and autonomous capabilities throughout the armed forces. Hegseth has described the technological transformation as «the fastest peacetime shift in modern military history» as drones and AI increasingly reshape modern warfare.
Military Leadership Faces Cuts
Hegseth also announced plans to significantly reduce the number of senior military officers, including cuts to general and admiral positions. Supporters frame the changes as an effort to eliminate unnecessary command layers, while critics have raised concerns about losing experienced leadership. Together with Project Meridian, the changes represent an effort to restructure both the Pentagon’s hierarchy and its technological priorities.
Musk Helps Envision Future Wars
Musk’s second government assignment therefore places him at the intersection of Pentagon strategy and technologies his businesses have helped develop. Project Meridian is expected to deliver recommendations after its compressed review. More than a year after leaving Washington during a spectacular feud with Trump, Musk is returning not to cut the federal government through DOGE, but to help envision America’s «future of warfare».
