SpaceX has unveiled plans for a massive $100 billion investment in Louisiana, where Elon Musk's aerospace company intends to build a next-generation mega-spaceport known as «Starbase Louisiana.» Planned for a sprawling 125,000-acre property near Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish, the development is intended to dramatically increase the company's ability to launch and recover its Starship vehicles at an unprecedented pace. SpaceX ultimately envisions the Louisiana complex becoming the «biggest launch site on Earth,» transforming a vast stretch of Gulf Coast land into an integrated aerospace manufacturing, launch and logistics hub. The project also represents a major expansion of SpaceX's existing footprint beyond its heavily used facilities in Texas and Florida, while potentially establishing Louisiana as one of the most important centers of the company's long-term Starship operations.

The project was formally presented during a special event in Abbeville involving Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and senior SpaceX leadership, with Landry describing the agreement as a «transformational moment» for the state's economic future. SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell appeared at the event to outline the enormous infrastructure requirements and the company's plans for the surrounding region, including commitments connected to coastal restoration. Musk did not attend in person, but appeared with Landry in a promotional announcement video while also publicizing the project on X. His description underscored just how ambitious SpaceX expects the complex to become: «Starbase Louisiana will ultimately have over a dozen launch towers, enabling more than 30 Starship flights per day and making it the biggest launch site on Earth! SpaceX makes sci-fi real.» If realized at that scale, the facility would operate at a cadence far beyond conventional spaceports.

Although SpaceX controls approximately 125,000 acres at the coastal site, the primary launch complexes and operational infrastructure are expected to occupy roughly 40,000 acres, supported by about 18 miles of Gulf Coast access. Plans call for five launch pads and, over time, more than a dozen launch towers capable of supporting repeated Starship missions and rapid vehicle recovery. The towers would use mechanical arms to capture returning rocket stages and spacecraft, allowing SpaceX to move toward the fast reusability required for dozens of daily flights. Starbase Louisiana is also being envisioned as far more than a collection of launch pads. The largely self-contained complex is expected to include propellant production, dedicated power generation, vehicle processing facilities, deep-water shipping infrastructure, data centers and an operational airport. Together, those systems would give SpaceX the industrial infrastructure needed to move Starship closer to mass-scale operations rather than treating each mission as an isolated launch event.

The Louisiana location gives SpaceX several strategic advantages as it tries to move Starship from an experimental launch system toward large-scale operations. The property sits near the Henry Hub in Erath, one of the world's most important natural gas pipeline centers, providing access to the methane needed to produce Starship's liquid-methane propellant. Its position along the Gulf Coast and near the Intracoastal Waterway also creates a direct marine transportation route for enormous rocket components that would be difficult to move over land. SpaceX could therefore transport hardware by barge from its manufacturing operations in South Texas directly to Louisiana. The new complex would also provide badly needed additional launch capacity as SpaceX expands beyond its existing operations at Starbase in Texas and Cape Canaveral in Florida. Louisiana, meanwhile, has adopted aerospace incentives and specialized legislation designed to make the state more attractive for projects of this scale.

Construction of Starbase Louisiana is expected to begin in 2027, with SpaceX targeting 2029 for the first orbital Starship launch from the facility. The long-term objective extends well beyond adding another location to the company's launch network. Musk's broader plans increasingly depend on turning Starship into a rapidly reusable transportation system capable of flying far more frequently than traditional rockets. A Louisiana complex eventually supporting more than 30 flights per day could provide the capacity required for massive deployments of Starlink satellites while supporting other proposed projects in orbit. SpaceX also sees high-volume Starship operations as potentially important for building orbital data centers and eventually moving some resource-intensive artificial intelligence computing infrastructure into space. Achieving those ambitions would require an entirely different scale of launch activity, making Starbase Louisiana a potentially critical component of SpaceX's effort to industrialize access to orbit.

3,000 permanent direct jobs

The project could also have a major economic impact on southern Louisiana, with projections calling for at least 3,000 permanent direct jobs and as many as 10,000 positions across the broader region as construction, aerospace manufacturing, logistics and supporting industries expand around the site. At the same time, building an enormous spaceport across coastal marshland is expected to place significant attention on the environmental consequences of the development. SpaceX has committed to financing coastal restoration initiatives intended to strengthen the Vermilion Parish shoreline and address severe erosion affecting the area. Those environmental commitments will become an important part of the project as construction progresses toward its planned 2027 start. If SpaceX ultimately delivers the launch cadence and infrastructure outlined in its announcement, Starbase Louisiana would represent far more than another launch facility: it would become one of the central pieces of Musk's effort to turn reusable spaceflight into a high-volume industrial operation.
