Missile Threat Forced Trump Into Secret Air Force One Escape

What appeared to be an ordinary presidential departure from Turkey concealed an extraordinary security operation surrounding Donald Trump. As cameras watched him prepare to leave Ankara following his final NATO summit, American officials were responding to highly sensitive intelligence suggesting an immediate threat that would transform the return journey into a carefully orchestrated evacuation.

U.S. intelligence had obtained multiple streams of credible information pointing to an active Iranian assassination plot. The intelligence was unusually detailed, indicating that Iranian operatives possessed precise information about Trump’s movements in Ankara. They reportedly knew where he was staying during the summit, including the specific floor of the building where he was located.

The danger extended directly to Trump’s departure from Turkey. Intelligence indicated that a surface-to-air missile could potentially be used against the presidential aircraft. Behind the visible departure, however, the boarding became part of a deception designed to mislead anyone potentially monitoring Trump’s movements at the airport.

Once Trump was out of public view, the operation took an extraordinary turn. He was secretly moved into the container of an airport catering truck, which lowered away from the aircraft and traveled across the tarmac. The president was then transferred to a smaller Air Force C-32A, the military version of a Boeing 757.

The C-32A carrying Trump operated under the call sign Reach 18, with normal tracking information concealed. Meanwhile, the Boeing 747 departed Ankara as a decoy and eventually flew under the Air Force One call sign. The maneuver was intended to divert attention away from the smaller aircraft secretly carrying the president toward Britain.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, White House personnel and traveling journalists remained aboard the decoy without knowing Trump was elsewhere. Reporters were instructed by the Secret Service to keep their window shades closed. Trump later joked about those instructions: «Because you’re probably on a dangerous flight… They didn’t ask me to close mine, but if they did, I would’ve done it. But if I go, you go. Right? Perhaps someday you want to change professions.»

Trump’s C-32A eventually landed at RAF Mildenhall in the United Kingdom, where the operation entered its final phase. He was discreetly transferred back to the main presidential aircraft before it reached cameras and other observers. The maneuver preserved the public appearance that Trump had remained aboard Air Force One throughout the unusual journey from Turkey.

Trump publicly confirmed the secret aircraft switch on 11 August. Speaking after an event in Ohio, he said he had simply followed instructions from his protective detail. «It’s only up to the Secret Service. I just follow what they’d like to do. I go by the Secret Service and the military. They wanted me to go on a different flight, a different plane, equal safety, but they wanted me to do it, so I did it. I do what they say.»

Trump said he had not sought extensive details about what prompted the extraordinary precautions. «I guess there was a threat out there. I didn’t really ask too much about it. I get a lot of threats.» He then added: «I have a lot of threats that you don’t know about. Non-consequential presidents don’t get threats. And I think that I may be the most consequential president.»
