New York man goes to Atlanta Sephora and pays with $100 bill. Then he sees how much change the worker gave him: ‘It’s a test’

A man visiting an Atlanta Sephora is surprised by the amount of change he receives after paying with $100 in cash.

TikTok creator Jus Qu'ez (@jusquez) splits his time between Atlanta and New York. He posted a video about the situation from his car. 

“So I just went in Sephora to grab three things, right?” he says to start the video. “But I hand the man a $100 bill. My change was supposed to be $18.90. Why this man gave me back $74?”

Jus Qu'ez laughs. “So I practically just got this for free,” he says. “A win is a win.”

The receipt shows that Jus Qu'ez gave the clerk $100 for $81.13 worth of products. The change on the receipt clearly reads $18.90.

‘The Kids Can't Count Soooo Lemme Start Paying in Cash'

In the comments section of the video, viewers said they've also seen this younger generation of cashiers struggle to give accurate cash change.

“The kids can't count sooo lemme start paying in cash,” joked one person.

“They start glitching when you pull out cash,” a second person said.

“I would have went right back in,” a third person wrote. “I don't play with God like that.”

Someone else said, “I just ordered some Summer Fridays and Eadem yesterday and it was marked as canceled for delivery. They refunded me $77 and it showed up at my door this morning. Something is going on with Sephora.”

Was He Wrong for Taking the Money?

In a follow-up video, Jus Qu'ez doubled down on his decision to take the money and vehemently denied that it was his responsibility to correct the error. He also suggested that everyone with an opinion on the matter, such as that this was a test from God, can “SHUT TF UP.”

According to this video by TikTok attorney Law By Mike, “It's illegal to intentionally keep extra change.” Regardless of how much it is, taking more change than is due to you at the register—even if the cashier is the one who made the mistake—can be considered petty theft.

That's the legal question. In terms of morality, ABC News wrote an article about a “Primetime” social experiment that tested whether people would tell the cashier about the mistake or take the money.

Several people who returned the money said it was a question of honesty. They didn't feel comfortable taking money that didn't belong to them, didn't want to get the cashier in trouble, or both. 

However, the article notes that 26 of the 46 people involved in the experiment didn't say anything and kept the money. So Jus Qu'ez is definitely not the only one with this perspective on the situation.
