Women Go to Texas Roadhouse. Then They See How the Meat Is Being Handled in the Kitchen.

When you eat out at a restaurant, you expect staff to treat your food with the same respect and hygienic standards you would when cooking for yourself.

However, most customers also know that this may not always be the case. Often, they choose not to think about it too hard.

When they're faced with something that looks questionable, though, whether that's a foreign object in a meal or staff handling food in an unsafe way, it becomes harder to ignore.

That's what one Texas Roadhouse customer says happened when she walked into one of the chain's restaurants. It bothered her enough that she and her friend left without eating.

What Was Happening At This Texas Roadhouse?

“POV: You went to Texas Roadhouse and walked right back out,” TikTok creator @mariahrellataylor wrote in the video's text overlay.

She films the kitchen pass at a Texas Roadhouse, where cooked food appears to be held before servers take it out to tables.

Several steaks and other cooked items sit on trays beneath heat lamps.

What catches the women's attention, however, are several cardboard-looking trays above the food. A worker in the kitchen appears to place the trays directly over some of the cooked meat before another employee on the other side picks them up with tongs and moves them elsewhere.

“What do you feel about that?” the TikToker asks the friend she's with.

“I don't know what that is,” her friend responds.

“What is that? What are they doing?” she asks.

“Then later we got on tiktok and seen what they've been doing but we left because it was just dirty in there in general and OVERLLLLY packed,” she wrote in the caption.

Here, she's likely referring to the recent internet hoax claiming that hundreds of thousands of Texas Roadhouse servers were intentionally tampering specifically with Black customers' food. The company vehemently denied the allegation, and the rumor is widely believed to be false.

What Could The Workers Be Doing?

Viewers quickly offered their own explanations for what the women were seeing.

“Hi!” one commenter wrote. “Those aren't dirty dishes, they are clean cardboard trays they use to soak up grease from food that comes out of the fryer before plating the items.”

Another believed the trays were Savadays.

“Those are savadays (save a days) they're food grade trays that are made for absorbing oil or holding hot food items,” they wrote. “Looks like they're using them to prevent the steaks from drying up under the heat lamps.”

For some context, Savadays are disposable food-service trays made from absorbent paperboard. Restaurants use them to hold hot or greasy foods, since the material absorbs excess moisture and oil while the food waits to be served.

The trays in the video do appear similar to that type of product. However, it's difficult to tell from the short clip exactly what the employees are doing with them.

Other viewers weren't convinced by the explanations.

“I've never ate at Texas Roachouse and never will,” one commenter wrote.

“Not a hairnet in sight…” another added.

Have Texas Roadhouse Customers Seen Other Questionable Things?

Apparently, this isn't the first time a Texas Roadhouse customer questioned the chain restaurant's hygiene standards.

One Reddit user on r/whatisit posted a photo of a large metal kitchen tool. It was sitting at the bottom of the lettuce in their wife's Texas Roadhouse salad. They said their waitress confirmed it had come from the kitchen, although she couldn't identify what equipment it belonged to. “Salad was replaced, of course,” they wrote.

In a Better Business Bureau complaint, another customer reported finding a piece of glass inside her drink. Texas Roadhouse responded through the BBB, and the complaint record indicates the customer ultimately received a refund.

A third customer, this time a Florida woman, said on TikTok that she found a small green press-on fingernail embedded in her steak. She claimed it ended up in her mouth and cut her gum.

Those incidents are all customer allegations rather than proof that Texas Roadhouse has a hygiene problem, however, and should be taken with a grain of salt.
