Bold and bright

If you ask us, understated swim shorts are a missed opportunity, which is why we're totally on board with the current trend for bolder, brighter hues. Bright colors are a big trend in swimwear this year, with summer citrus hues like orange and yellow being the most popular. One thing to keep in mind with this trend is skin tone. Bright colors can wash out lighter skin tones, so check out what types of shades work best for your skin tone before taking the plunge.

Solid Color

The best way to make sure all your photos look good is to avoid clashing prints with your chums. Not only do solid color swimsuit photos not age as quickly, but you're also more likely to find a single shade that flatters you than an entire pattern. Quick tip, if you're low on vitamin D or didn't have time to get a spray tan before you flew, opt for dark green, burgundy or navy shades.

From the beach to the bar

Fitted swim shorts were a game changer when they first appeared, and today they're more relevant than ever. Many people have spent the better part of the last two years slouching in joggers and baggy T-shirts, so every opportunity to dress up should be grabbed with both hands...even going to the beach. There are plenty of floral options if you want to kill two birds with one stone, or stick with a simple solid color to maximize the potential of beach to bar.

Enlistment in the military can add a bit of rugged masculinity to even the lightest of swimsuits. As for length, action man shorts should stay at mid-thigh level to avoid any surfer connotations. When you get home, increase the cost/use ratio by making the most of both pieces. Wear the ensemble separated by a white tee to tone down the Club Tropicana vibe.
