I already get so much anxiety when entering a friend’s house for the first time, mostly because I’m terrified of accidentally breaking some family rule everyone else assumes is obvious. I’ll watch where people put their shoes. I’ll wait to see whether anyone else reaches for food. I’ll probably ask permission before touching something I have already been explicitly told I can touch. I’d like to think this makes me a considerate guest. It probably just makes me look suspiciously alert. Either way, I would have had my work cut out for me as a houseguest a few centuries ago.
