20 Victorian Beach Rules That Would Baffle Swimmers Today

Victorians seem to have had a habit of complicating things more than they needed to, from courtship and dating to sending letters and, well, even going to the beach. Give me a swimsuit, flip-flops, and something cold to drink, and I’m pretty much ready to go. Give a Victorian the same invitation, and suddenly we’re discussing bathing machines, wool dresses, gender-separated swimming areas, appropriate ankle exposure, and whether a horse needs to drag your changing room into the ocean. I don’t know at what point a beach trip became an administrative procedure, but they certainly committed to it. Here are 20 Victorian beach rules and customs that would baffle swimmers today.
