‘Superman’ star Valerie Perrine dead at 82

Valerie Perrine was an American actress best known for her role as Eve Teschmacher in Superman (1978) and its 1980 sequel, where she starred alongside Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman. Her performance as the glamorous and conflicted assistant to Lex Luthor made her a memorable part of the early superhero film era.

Before Superman, Perrine gained critical acclaim for her breakout role in Lenny (1974), where she portrayed Honey Bruce, the wife of comedian Lenny Bruce. Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, as well as a BAFTA win and a Golden Globe nomination—marking her as one of Hollywood’s rising talents at the time.

 

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, she appeared in a variety of films and television projects, including Slaughterhouse-Five (1972) and numerous guest roles on popular TV series. Known for her striking screen presence and versatility, she often played complex, unconventional characters.

In later years, Perrine stepped back from acting and has lived with Parkinson’s disease, which she was diagnosed with in the early 2000s. Despite health challenges, she remains admired for her contributions to classic cinema, particularly her role in shaping the legacy of the original Superman films.

She was 82.
