A Russian overnight assault on Kyiv has damaged one of the most important religious monuments in Eastern Christianity, setting part of the historic Dormition Cathedral ablaze inside the UNESCO-listed Kyiv Pechersk Lavra complex. Ukrainian officials said the attack was carried out during a massive wave of missiles and drones launched across the country, with the cathedral’s roof suffering extensive fire damage. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike as «one of Russia’s most serious crimes against Christian culture to date,» while accusing Moscow of deliberately targeting the area. The cathedral, whose origins date back to the 11th century, has survived centuries of invasions, wars, fires and destruction, making the latest attack especially significant for Ukraine’s cultural and religious heritage.
Russian Strike Damages Historic Cathedral
Russia’s latest large-scale assault on Kyiv has damaged one of the most important religious and cultural landmarks in Eastern Christianity, sparking international condemnation and renewed calls for stronger support for Ukraine’s air defenses. During a massive overnight barrage on June 15, Russian missiles and drones struck the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the spiritual heart of Ukrainian Orthodox Christianity.
Fire Breaks Out at Dormition Cathedral
The attack ignited a major fire at the Dormition Cathedral, also known as the Assumption Cathedral, burning through approximately 800 square meters of the cathedral’s roof. Ukrainian officials said the strike caused significant damage to one of the country’s most treasured religious monuments and one of the best-known landmarks in Kyiv.
Nearly 1,000 Years of History
The Dormition Cathedral is the historic mother church of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery complex and has served as one of Eastern Europe’s most important religious centers for nearly a millennium. Construction began in 1073 under Saint Theodosius of Kyiv with financial support from Prince Sviatoslav II of Kyiv. The church was consecrated in 1089 and became a major center of Orthodox Christianity.
Surviving Centuries of Destruction
Throughout its history, the cathedral endured repeated disasters and invasions. It suffered major damage during the Mongol sack of Kyiv in 1240, was attacked during Crimean Tatar raids, and later survived a devastating city-wide fire in 1718. Each time, the structure was rebuilt, becoming an enduring symbol of religious and cultural resilience in Ukraine.
Ukrainian Baroque Rebirth
Following the destruction caused by the 1718 fire, the cathedral was reconstructed between 1722 and 1729 in the Ukrainian Baroque style. The rebuilding transformed the church into the golden-domed landmark recognized around the world today. Its distinctive architecture became one of the defining features of the Kyiv skyline and a symbol of Ukrainian Christianity.
Destroyed by the Soviets, Rebuilt Again
The cathedral suffered another catastrophic loss during World War II. On November 3, 1941, it was blown up after Soviet NKVD forces secretly mined the structure during their retreat from Kyiv. Following Ukraine’s independence, a major reconstruction effort began in 1995. The cathedral was rebuilt to match its historic appearance and was officially consecrated again on August 24, 2000.
Zelensky Visits the Site
President Volodymyr Zelensky personally visited the damaged cathedral alongside Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko following the attack. Surveying the destruction, Zelensky condemned the strike in some of his strongest remarks regarding attacks on cultural heritage since the beginning of the war.
«One of Russia's Most Serious Crimes»
In an official statement, Zelensky declared: «A Russian strike on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra set the Dormition Cathedral on fire – a church whose history dates back to the 11th century. And this is one of Russia’s most serious crimes against Christian culture to date.» His comments highlighted the symbolic significance of the attack on one of Ukraine’s most important religious monuments.
Appeal to G7 Leaders
Because the strike occurred as world leaders gathered for the G7 summit in France, Zelensky used the incident to call for additional international support. He stated: «It is very important that there be a response from the G7 countries, which are now gathering for their summit – and that this response be decisive and substantive: more pressure on the aggressor and more support for Ukraine’s air defence, especially anti-ballistic capabilities.»
Ukraine Rejects Russian Explanation
Russia’s Defense Ministry denied responsibility for the damage and claimed that the cathedral had been struck by a malfunctioning Ukrainian Patriot air-defense missile. Ukrainian authorities immediately rejected the allegation. The Security Service of Ukraine released images showing debris from Russian Geran-2 and Shahed drones recovered directly from the cathedral’s burned roof, arguing that the evidence clearly contradicted Moscow’s version of events.
Symbol of Ukrainian Identity
For Ukraine, the strike represents far more than damage to a historic building. The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra complex is considered one of the holiest sites in Orthodox Christianity and has played a central role in Ukrainian religious life for centuries. Having survived Mongol invasions, fires, Soviet destruction and multiple reconstructions, the Dormition Cathedral has long symbolized the endurance of Ukrainian culture and faith. The latest attack has therefore been viewed not only as damage to a UNESCO World Heritage site but also as an assault on a cornerstone of Ukraine’s national and spiritual identity.
