Couple decide to have a country club wedding. Then a golfer steals the show: ‘Yeah I’d skip that tee’
In a perfect world, most people have their dream wedding. It's one of the only times in life in which it's socially acceptable to blow tens of thousands of dollars on a huge party, dress up to the nines, and gather people from all walks of life in one place.
In practice, things often are slightly more complicated.
Footage from one wedding is going viral thanks to the happy couple's thunder getting stolen—by a golfer, no less.
What could have paused this country club wedding?
Content creator Assunta Maria (@magoret13) posted a video featuring an active wedding getting upstaged by some action on the adjacent green. The video has since accumulated more than 475,000 views.
“When at a country club wedding,” Maria wrote in text overlaying the video. The footage showed wedding guests sitting under a large green pavilion in wooden chairs. The pavilion appeared to be erected directly beside the “tee-off,” or starting area for golfers, as there was a man, who was not a wedding guest, playing golf less than 10 feet away from it.
As Maria panned her camera, three men, who appeared to include the groom and wedding officiant, stood waiting in the altar area. It is unclear whether the wedding had actually commenced, as more than half of the chairs were empty.
At the start of Maria's video, the golfer took a swing to start his round. Multiple heads turned to look at him. The wedding guests watched as his swing apparently ended with success. Some of the guests started clapping, and there were smatterings of laughter. Another guest let out a “woo!”

What did viewers think?
While many viewers seemed to have scathing opinions of such a setup for the wedding, others thought it was all fairly harmless. One person even commented that the golfing acted as free “entertainment whilst waiting.”
Multiple viewers wondered why the golfer didn't choose to “skip that tee” since it was visibly close to a wedding, but in response others pointed out he'd paid for all 18 holes fair and square and that “no one is even there yet.” Ultimately, most viewers seemed to wonder, “Why set up next to the T off” in the first place? And better yet, why didn't the venue block off the area for the wedding?
“Never understood the appeal of a country club wedding,” one viewer wrote. Another replied, “If you're a member [it] is cheaper but normally they have indoors spaces for that lol.”
“This is why I paid extra for the players to stop playing golf for an hour,” read one comment. Another echoed, “Our venue blocked off that hole and they had to walk to the next.”
“I thought it was a funeral at first!” laughed a viewer.
In a plot twist, TikTok user Kyle Hoog commented on Maria's video, revealing that the golfer in her video “[was her] best friends dad.”
“I seriously was just taking the video to send to my friends fiancé so she could use it as evidence to not have their wedding on a golf course,” Maria commented in response to Hoog. “Was not expecting this or anyone to clap.”
What's the deal with country club weddings?
While viewers in Maria's comment section clearly found the choice of a country club to be a controversial one for a wedding venue, they're a favored option for many couples. Country club weddings are hailed by Wedding Wire as “one-stop-shops for amazing events” with “beautiful scenery” and “many … wedding details handled in-house.”
There are some people online who find country club weddings to be “overdone and uninspiring” with a vibe that “feels like a corporate retreat,” but wedding photographer Steven Dalton details “the allure of country club wedding venues” on his website. He says that “country club wedding venues provide a seamless blend of elegance, stunning views, and practical pricing options.”
“One of the biggest draws of country club wedding venues is the stunning views they offer,” Dalton says. “Picture-perfect backdrops are abundant … Planning a wedding can be stressful, but country clubs often simplify the process with all-inclusive pricing.”
