‘New Fear Unlocked’: Woman Checks Into Alabama Doubletree. Now She Needs To Know Who Was In Room 331

An attempted late night check-in turned into a series of errors when a couple tried to get to their DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Decatur Riverfront room.

One woman and her husband discovered, to their dismay, that everyone is prone to make mistakes in the middle of the night.

SamanthaFox26 (@samanthafox26), who had a speaking engagement the next day, rolled into Decatur, Alabama at 3 a.m. She'd reserved her room prior to arrival. But that didn't guarantee the couple their promised bed.

In a post about the experience, Fox said, “Buckle up for a sec. I travel a lot. I travel for work. So I stay in up to four hotels a week. So quite a lot of experience with check in and check out process, and how hotels work. And though you stay with one brand, it is never the same.” For her, that's part of the fun.

But not this time. Since the couple arrived so late at night, they were grumpy and tired. Then, the DoubleTree counter clerk reportedly informed them that the hotel had just switched from keys to key cards, and he was locked out of the computer that makes the key cards. Thus the room they'd reserved wasn't available.

The clerk then offered to put them in room 331. Off they went. They unlocked the door and went inside. Then Fox noticed something: “That's odd, the bed doesn't look made.”

She continued, “There's a body in the bed.”

The realization hit. “Somebody peacefully angel sleeping in that bed. And we just walked in on them, because we were given keys by the hotel staff to go stay in that room,” she explained.

Back To The Front Desk

They immediately backed out and returned to the front desk. There, Fox's husband attempted to offer a reasonable solution. He asked that they be let into their original DoubleTree room, promising they didn't even need keys. Just sleep.

However, the front desk couldn't even access the room. “Which poses another problem,” said Fox. “If you don't have access to those rooms, you should not let your customers sleep in those rooms. What if somebody needs urgent help and you can't get to them? Because they're behind a locked door nobody can get into?”

Finally the clerk tracked down another room for them. Before they got to find it, they asked that the clerk ensure that no one was already in it. Thankfully, no one was.

Yet that masked another problem: the location. It was on the eighth floor, but the hotel's elevator only goes to the fifth. Apparently the clerk forgot to tell them it was in the hotel's next building.

Nonchalance Meets Warnings

Now Fox is hoping that through algorithmic karma her video, which as been viewed over 11,000 times, will make it to the previous guest of room 331. That way, Fox can tell them of their inadvertent midnight visitors. She feels that she'd want to know.

People were fascinated and horrified in  equal measure. “Another reason to always lock your door while inside,” wrote eyemwatchin.

Divine_reveals agreed that it's a huge mistake. “That's crazy and quite unsettling!!,” she said.

The.life.aquatic didn't think it was a big deal.”This happens all the time at hotels,” they said. “This is nothing lol.”

Fox disagreed. “Yeah,” she wrote. “No it doesn't.”

What To Do If A Stranger Walks Into Your Hotel Room

It goes without saying that a stranger should not walk into your hotel room. But what if it happens? At best it's an accident. But you should leave anyway. Go to the front desk and request an incident report—even if it seems like a harmless, late night mistake. If they won't leave and you don't feel safe, retreat to the bathroom and lock the door. In the event of a robbery or assault, report it to both the hotel and the authorities.

In a situation like Fox's, the best advice is to report the event to corporate after requesting that the employee file a written report.

To prevent a situation like this, especially for solo travelers, always use all available locks. For an extra measure, you may want to consider traveling with a door wedge and masking tape to further secure the door and cover the peephole.
