An ex-cream cheese factory worker goes to a Milwaukee Kroger and reveals something interesting about the cream cheese section of the dairy aisle. Here's his tip.
TikTok creator Tontito (@ggtontito) posted his video straight from the dairy aisle at his local Kroger.
“I used to work at a cream cheese manufacturer, and I promise you, every one of these cream cheeses is made in the exact same vat in the exact same warehouse and just sent out to different areas of packaging and shipping,” he says. “So never pay $6.49 when you can pay $2.19, all right? I promise you, it's the same.”
Are all the Cream Cheeses at Kroger the ‘Same' Thing?
In the comments section of the video, some viewers begged to differ—and they were not shy about voicing that opinion.
“That's complete lies,” said one person. “Because the Great Value tastes disgusting. Philadelphia cream cheese is top tier tasting.”
“Does not taste the same,” agreed a second person. “Philly tastes way better.”
“Then why does Philadelphia have a completely unique texture compared to all the others?” asked a third person.
Another person said, “There's certain things I won't get store brand because you can tell the difference and cream cheese is definitely one of them.”
However, at least one person agreed. “My husband works at a yogurt factory and Great Value is made by a well-known brand,” they wrote.
Who Is in the Right Here About Cream Cheese Brands?
Cream cheese isn't one of the products listed in this Yahoo Finance article, but it does describe how Walmart's Great Value products are generally produced through deals with companies like Sara Lee, KitchenAid, ConAgra, and Land O'Lakes.
Unfortunately, Walmart doesn't offer a ton of information on its website regarding where specific Great Value products are made and in what facility. The Great Value cream cheese box shows that it was distributed by Walmart out of Bentonville, Arizona.
According to Kraft Heinz, the company currently gets the cream and milk it uses in Philadelphia cream cheese from Wisconsin and New York. It doesn't own any dairy farms in Philadelphia, despite the name.
When it comes to which is superior, Tasting Table did a ranking last year. It included both Philadelphia and Great Value cream cheese in block form. First of all, the article is proof that there is at least enough variation in the product quality among cream cheeses that baking experts can tell the difference.
Great Value came in at number 7 on the list. This surprised the author, who praised its neutrality but said it is otherwise not impressive. Philadelphia ranked first, with the reviewer calling it the “gold standard” for a good reason. And the biggest pro for Philly, the author said, was by far its superior texture.
