A Virginia man thought he was just parking his boat. Then he ended up encountering a blue crab with a big attitude.

In a viral TikTok video with 182,300 views, content creator Robfishing_again shared the cute interaction that started with his concern about the welfare of the little critter. Commenters found the whole interaction to be absolutely comical.

“I swear to God, you can't make this up,” he began in the clip. He then explained that he was driving to go park his boat when he noticed the crab in the road. So the man walked back to the intersection to take a look.

He was shocked that a blue crab was casually strolling down the street.

It also appeared to be ready to take him on.

As the man approached the crustacean, it backed away from him and held its claws up.

Where are blue crabs commonly found?

The man is correct that a parking lot is not a common place for a blue crab, but they can venture from nearby, suitable habitats.

Blue crabs are commonly found in the Chesapeake/Atlantic regions in or near water. If a parking lot is near a marsh, creek, bay, drainage ditch or other brackish/freshwater area, crabs may venture there in search of food.

Nonetheless, it is surprising to see them on land because crabs breathe through gills, just like fish. However, unlike fish, they can survive out of water for much longer—if a crab's gills remain moist, they can stay out of the water for about 24 hours.

Typically, when they are out of water, they prefer to hide in moist, dark and cool areas to protect their gills from drying out. That's why the man was especially surprised to find one walking down a road in broad daylight.

A closer look at the crab the man encountered also revealed it may not be just a regular blue crab.

What is a blue land crab?

Not to be confused with blue crabs, blue land crabs live on land. They are mostly found in the Caribbean but can also be spotted in South Florida and Texas. Unlike their water-reliant family members, these crabs live most of their lives on land and only venture back to the water to drink or breed.

They dig deep into moist land to create burrows that allow water to seep in. They also tend to be very shy and do not pose a harm to humans.

Still, it is unlikely the man encountered one of these land-dwelling crabs due to the location where the video was recorded.

What did commenters have to say?

In the video's comment section, many found the man's interaction with the crab to be funny.

They imagined the crab was willing to fight the man, if necessary, to stay alive.

“Anddd he ready to square up,” user ABC's crab and Seafood commented.

“Born in the bay, raised in the streets. [T]hat's Lil' Pinch of the Crustacean Nation,” another TikToker said.

Others wondered how the crab made it so far away from water.

“How far is he from water? Lmao! Maybe he escaped from someone's container,” a commenter asked.
