Amongst my people, if a family member was on his or her deathbed, one of the ways we could guarantee the deceased’s spirit would move on into the afterlife was to invite a priest over to say blessings and prayers for them. It seems as though other peoples and places also needed to take steps to make sure the dead departed smoothly! In certain parts of Britain, instead of a priest, it was up to an actual person to consume food associated with the corpse, thereby taking on the sins of the deceased themselves. Yes, I know. I’m not sure it makes much sense either. Although we do know that the practice did exist (thanks to historical documentation), we don’t know its origins, how widespread it actually was, or even what the regulations were!
