Las Vegas man orders drink from bartender. Then he asks her if they have any horse racing machines: ‘Old version is at the Golden Gate’

Bartenders field a lot of strange questions during any given shift—and it's easy for there to be some miscommunication, especially on a loud, busy night.

But every so often, a customer decides to dig their heels in for no apparent reason. And one bartender says that's exactly what happened to her one night over a horse racing gaming machine.

‘You lied to me'

Las Vegas bartender Marti (@martiii_soulll) shared a story about a customer who accused her of lying to him. Her video has since accumulated more than 1,600 views.

“Last night, this young guy comes up to the bar, he orders drinks, he hands me his credit card,” Marti said. “I run it, I hand it back to him. And he's like, ‘Oh, before you go, can I ask you a question … Do you guys have any other horse racing machines up here?'”

Marti told him no, and the bar only had “the new version,” which was directly behind him. She said the old coin-operated version they used to have was now at their “sister property at the Golden Gate.” He thanked her and left, only to come back about half an hour later for another round. And this time, he confronted her.

“He's like, ‘You lied to me,'” Marti said. “And I'm like, ‘What did I lie to you about?' … He's like, ‘Earlier I asked you if you guys had any horse racing machines up here, and you told me no.'”

Apparently, the customer had neither paid attention to Marti nor seen the new machine sitting right there. Marti said she was “just confused.”

“He was sassy with me, like mad at me,” she finished. “As if I was being malicious, not telling him we had one horse racing machine that he walked past twice. Actually three times, because he came back for a second round. What the [expletive]?”

What exactly are these ‘horse racing machines'?

Many of Marti's viewers were amused in her comment section, with one person joking that the customer “needs his hearing checked.” But what's all the fuss over horse racing machines, anyway?

The machines in question are known as historical horse racing terminals, or HHRs. According to gambling site EquinEdge, “Historic Horse Racing or Instant Racing is a form of wagering based on previously run horse races.”

“An HHR machine lets you choose a wager without showing the full identity of the past race,” EquinEdge writes. “The machine may display limited information about the horses, such as past performance data, odds ranges, or statistical rankings. After you place your wager, the machine reveals the race or outcome and calculates your payout under the applicable rules.”

The “old version” of horse racing machines that Marti mentioned appears to be a specific piece of Las Vegas history. Golden Gate Hotel & Casino confirmed in a June 2026 press release it was the new home of the “last remaining Sigma Derby mechanical horse racing game” in Vegas—and “one of the last remaining Sigma Derby games in existence.” The Las Vegas Review-Journal described it as a “cult classic.”
