New York doctor orders labs for patient. Then she finds out Labcorp’s connection to Petco and PetSmart: ‘Boycott’

Dr. Aria Young (@drariayoung), a naturopathic doctor whose TikTok page notes a focus on mental health and trauma recovery, is asking colleagues to reconsider Labcorp after learning where the diagnostics company gets some of its research animals. Her video, captioned “FOR THE ANIMALS,” publishes a Labcorp privacy inbox and the email address of the Wayne County, N.Y., district attorney.

The story

Young is not an MD. However, naturopathic doctors (ND/NMD) graduate from a four-year naturopathic medical school and, in licensed states, can order labs and diagnose, per the American Medical Association. Young says she has ordered labs through Labcorp in the past.

“I learned recently that Labcorp gets its supply of animals used for testing from a little [expletive] [expletive] company called Marshall BioResources,” she says. She calls their conduct torture and claims federal animal-welfare protections are effectively unenforced there. Per her account, Young then called Labcorp, “got a [expletive] bone to pick,” and was routed to two email contacts. The woman who answered, she says, had not heard of Marshall.

Young posted both addresses publicly. She wants medical peers to weigh who they buy from. “More health care professionals need to know this so we can discern better between what companies that we should support and what companies we shouldn't.”

In the comment section, viewers reflected on the apparent connection.

“You have to be an actual demon to work for a company like this how do these people sleep at night,” said one person.

One person took PETA to task. “Where's PETA on those??? Ohhhhhh ya bc PETA is bs… thank you for speaking on this!!!!,” they said. But Young replied, “I think PETA is actually working to do something. I'm not necessarily advocating for PETA because I think they're problematic too, but they are actively involved in trying to change this.”

One person claimed to have worked with Marshall BioResources. Some theorized they had been sent by the company to run soft interference in these sorts of social media-specific situations. The TikTok page has no posts or even likes. “Hi, lab animal technician who's worked with Marshall beagles,” the commenter wrote. “Feel free to ask me anything.”

Young wasn't having any defense of Marshall BioResources.

“Are you actually trying to convince people that Marshall abides by animal welfare laws when we've SEEN things like the videos of d*ead dogs lying in feces and dogs being thrown around in cages?” she asked. “The documentation of them being injected with p*oison and left to die slow, painful d*eaths?”

Cages and contracts

Marshall BioResources, based in North Rose, N.Y., is a large U.S. breeder of dogs and ferrets for laboratory use. They have long been under fire for their practices with lab beagles.

PETA says the company confines as many as 22,000 beagles. The advocacy organization adds that the company has been cited by federal authorities for “numerous animal welfare violations.” Young noted that the USDA has logged more than 20 Animal Welfare Act citations against Marshall's operations since 2007.

The Labcorp link is direct on the U.K. side, where the protest group Camp Beagle documents that Labcorp's Huntingdon and Harrogate labs regularly purchase beagle dogs from MBR for regulatory toxicology testing. The company also sells pet products to PetSmart and Petco, according to PETA.
