I’ve always loved the name Diana growing up. I thought it was an absolutely lovely name for a royal (when you don’t think of her tragic fate). It took me embarrassingly long to realize that Diana wasn’t actually one of those traditional royal names. Princess Diana had simply claimed it so thoroughly that my brain filed it under “princess names” forever. Names like Elizabeth, William, Edward, and Henry are another story. They’ve been recycled through royal families for centuries, and with that comes a lot of history, from glorious reigns to scandals you probably wouldn’t want associated with your newborn. Choosing a royal baby name, it turns out, comes with a very long list of previous owners.
