‘Compliments don’t pay the rent’: Longhorn Steakhouse server waits on ‘easy’ table. Then they tip her

A Longhorn Steakhouse server waits on a table of college students who praise her service. After they leave, she realizes they tipped her a pittance.

TikTok creator Macy (@servingqueenmacy) posted a video that lays out what happened. “I had a table split their tip four ways tonight over $1.20. Let me explain,” she says to start the video.

“So I'm at Longhorn and I get this table of four college kids,” Macy says. “Super sweet the whole time, honestly. Giving me compliments the whole night. And I'm eating it up.”

What Happened With This Longhorn Steakhouse Table?

Macy says the group split three entrees and an appetizer, and everyone ordered water. The entire time, she says the table was “super easy, low maintenance.”

The bill came out to $68 and the group asked to split it four ways. “Totally normal,” Macy says. “Each of them hands me their card separately and I run [them].”

The problem didn't come until the students had left and Macy went to close out the tabs.

“Each one left me $.30,” she says. “On a table that told me I was the best server they've had like four different times. If you're going to tip me $1.20, don't also tell me I changed your whole night.”

Macy says the apparent false flattery is only one part of her issue with what happened. She's also upset that it will impact her data on TipMax, which is an app that servers and bartenders use to track their income.

“I'm genuinely so scared to see what this is going to do to my TipMax average,” Macy says. “And there it is. It was literally over 20% before this.” It now reads 16.2%.

Are the College Students or the Server in the Wrong?

In the comments section of the video, several viewers defended the college students as simply not having a lot of money. 

“Girl, they're in college,” wrote one person. 

“They're kids, come on,” a second person wrote. 

“Three entrees split four ways,” noted a third person. “They're struggling.”

However, at least one person said they empathize with Macy.

“People like this give a bad reputation to college kids,” one person wrote. “I'm in college and me and my friends just do one bill and then send each other money after to make it easy for the server. And we tip a minimum of 18%, usually more if the service is good.”

Are College Students Bad Tippers?

College students are generally known as a demographic that tips poorly, because their main job is usually learning. Of course, that's a stereotype that may not apply to everyone across the board. 

That is the takeaway from this Reddit thread posted to r/talesfromyourserver eight years ago. In the post, a server reveals that they served a college student during a breakfast shift. While they expected to get no tip, the server was pleasantly surprised to receive a $10 tip. 

In response to a college student who said they try to be courteous because they don't have a ton of extra money to tip, the OP said that is appreciated.

“It is nice to be good to your server and a good table can make a night worth it just as much as a good tip,” they wrote.
