When I first heard about the “love letters” Henry VIII wrote to Anne Boleyn, I pictured something along the lines of the sappy romance novels you find in the drugstore checkout line. But once I saw the actual letters the king sent Anne Boleyn, I could not have been more mistaken. Of course, it’s difficult to get sappy if all you have is the king’s side of things. For those who don’t know, Henry VIII was the King of England in the early 16th century. His claim to fame, though, is that he had six wives. So why would it be remarkable that he wrote love letters to Anne when, well, he’s not really considered to be a one-woman man.
