I’m sure you’ve heard of London’s “sad and gray” reputation before. It’s gotten to the point where it’s basically a stereotype in modern times. But there’s something unsettling about that very particular shade of gloomy. Londoners had already been experiencing dense, dirty fog for generations by 1952. The idea that the whole city was covered in a layer of thick, unhealthy smog didn’t exactly send shockwaves through the population. Thick fogs (colloquially known as “pea-soupers”) were just another fact of urban life! But that particular layer of fog that descended upon London on December 5, 1952, was different in some way.
