Gone are the days of shopping with a magnifying glass, trying to find what you need in a busy Walmart aisle. Next time you're at a Walmart, check out this hack on its app to help you shop more efficiently.

‘We're About to Put Y'all On'

The spice aisle can be a strenuous place. Tons of little bottles and labels with varied fonts, designs, colors, and legibility levels. It can be hard to find what you're looking for.

Bcookie (@b2stepsahead) shared a Walmart hack to make finding a difficult item a breeze. The video has 3.8 million views and 475,400 likes as of this writing.

“So, we're in the aisle trying to find Cajun seasoning,” Bcookie says.

Then, they locate the product on the app.

“It's gonna tell you what aisle it's in. A12, ‘kay, and we're in A12. It's gonna be somewhere around here,” Bcookie continues.

They press the “flash price tag” button on the app, and exactly that happens. The digital price tag of the seasoning they were looking for flashed a light, showing where in the aisle and on the shelf the product was.

“Oh, bingo,” Bcookie's friend says as the price tag flashes in front of them.

Pros and Cons of This Feature

Walmart's senior vice president of digital transformation, Greg Cathey, speaks about the advantages beyond saving customers time in a CNBC article.

He notes that it will help employees and delivery staff when finding items around the store. Packing orders for delivery can include a long laundry list of items. The flashing lights help not only customers find things with greater ease but also workers.

What might be a catch associated with these labels?

“Yeah but those digital labels mean they can change the price WHILE you shop,” one comment mentions.

This may be true. A Guardian article notes that an analysis report by the AFL-CIO Tech Institute, a public policy org that centers worker rights in an economy rapidly changing by technology, notes the following:

“The report argues that electronic shelf labels use the same pricing systems that allow dynamic pricing – price changes such as increasing allergy medication prices when pollen counts are high – to surveillance pricing, changing prices based on personal data.”

Other viewers weigh in with their thoughts on the technology.

“'50 cents added to price for navigational assistance,'” one comment mocks the flashing feature with.

Others applaud it.

“Walmart might have just went top tier with this move alone,” another comment says.

“All that and they don't got Apple Pay,” someone else notes.

“Does anybody feel like companies are trying to make things simpler for us so that we become stupid?” another person chimes in.
