Based on one Walmart shopper's experience with the retail giant's private-label chicken broth, you should probably examine the box before pouring it into your soup.

TikTok user and registered nurse Sara (@mamaking1317), based in Oklahoma, says she gave the broth the “smell test” before using it.

What she found upon taking a closer look made her film the discovery and ask viewers if they could figure out what was wrong.

What Did She Find Inside A Box of Great Value Chicken Broth?

In the clip, which has been viewed over 353,200 times, Sara says she had just pulled the box out of the fridge.

“Naturally, I just smelled it first, just to see,” she says. “Make sure that it still smelled good.”

She points out that the best-by date on the package is November 7th, 2027, yet the broth smelled odd.

“I thought it smelled like cleaner, which was weird, right?” she says. “So I started pouring it. I'm gonna show you what comes out.”

Sara grabs a bowl and starts pouring the liquid into it, but something seems to be blocking the opening.

“It won't even pour cause it's clogged,” she says, as white, gelatinous pieces start coming out in chunks.

“It's like a cloth that smells like bleach,” she says. “It's falling apart.”

She's dumbfounded. “What the heck is that?” Sara asks her viewers.

Viewers Have Theories

In the comments, users wondered whether the slimy bits were spoilage due to user error.

“If you actually read the box it says use within a few days of opening,” one user wrote.

Sara responded, “Why didn't I think of that?”

Based on that response, it's likely she had already opened the box and placed it in the fridge. Except it's unclear for how long.

According to Great Value's user directions for this specific product, customers should use it within 14 days after opening. What she discovered could be spoilage due to bacterial overgrowth.

“It's the chicken fat congealing,” another user suggested.

However, according to the product listing, this broth is fat-free, which makes this theory unlikely.

Commenters also overwhelmingly say they distrust Walmart products.

“I'm not [an] expert but I don't trust Walmart food products,” one said.

“That's the mucus plug,” joked a fourth commenter. “Congratulations you have a broth baby.”

Have Other Great Value Shoppers Come Across Something Similar?

Based on verified customer reviews on Walmart's product listing for Great Value chicken broth, this isn't an isolated incident.

One reviewer said they noticed the box was swollen, but ignored it since the expiration date was months away.

“Today, when I opened the product to use it, this is what came out of it, along with a horrible smell,” they wrote, attaching a photo of slimy goop coming out of the opening.

“I did not fully remove the contents because it made me feel sick, and I honestly did not want to know what was inside,” they added.

Another reviewer said the product ruined their entire “16 quart pot of soup” when they poured it in their pot and “what looks and smells like fish skin and bunch of small white chunks” came out.

Another described a similar situation.

“I was making a pot of chicken noodle soup-had all my veggies, seasonings and chicken in and went to add this broth-a chunk of grey sludge came out,” they wrote.

A concerning number of customers also said their box arrived already opened.

“I was not able to use this item because when I went to use it for what I purchased it for, it was open already,” one wrote. “The plastic seal was broken, and the silver foil seal inside had been punched through.”

How To Report an Issue With a Great Value Product

Walmart's Great Value has a Satisfaction Guarantee Hotline at 888-287-1915. It says it can assist with satisfaction concerns, complaints, refund or replacement requests, and questions about Walmart's private-brand products.

If customers believe that a product may be unsafe to consume after opening it before the best-by date, it may be warranted to also file a complaint with health agencies.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for example, accepts complaints about unsafe or mislabeled food.
