I still get a tiny jolt of discomfort whenever I’m forced to yell “REPRESENTATIVE” into a phone menu, or to wave my hand near a soap dispenser that’s determined not to work. It’s almost second nature for us to expect “self-service” machines that can and should operate independently of human intervention. For much of the last two hundred years, however, that kind of service was provided by real people. They plugged cords to connect your phone call, operated pumps to fill your car with gasoline, checked clocks to provide the correct time, and even carried you all the way up to the 20th floor in an elevator.
