Texas woman goes to bar. She didn’t expect to be berated by the bartender for this common drink order: ‘I didn’t mean to make you angry’
When a person goes to a bar, they don't usually expect the bartender to have their drink order memorized. They do, however, expect the bartender to know a few classics. Most cocktail enthusiasts, for instance, have the recipe for a cosmopolitan, an old fashioned, and a margarita down to a particular science.
But what about a lemon drop? Sara (@singularsara), an “Oklahoma girl turned Texan,” shares how a recent experience trying to order one went. It didn't go the way you'd expect.
What Happened When She Tried to Order a Lemon Drop?
“Sorry to the bart*nder for asking for a lemon drop,” Sara says in the on-screen text of her video. “It was a joke … I didn't mean to make you angry and scream at me. I was happy to change my order to a green tea [shot].”
It's unclear how the conversation with the bartender actually went down. But, per Sara's account, her request for the drink went unanswered and caused at least some fury.
What is a Lemon Drop?
While many people are already familiar with a lemon drop, it is a significantly more niche cocktail when compared to a mai tai.
So, for those who are not in the know, a lemon drop is a vodka-based cocktail that typically contains lemon juice and triple sec.
The Oxford Companion to Spirits & Cocktails credits Norman Jay Hobday, the owner of the San Francisco bar Henry Africa's, as the drink's inventor. The publication also notes that Hobday made his lemon drop with premium spirits and fresh juices. The original cocktail always came with its well-known sugar rim, which is still a feature in most standard recipes.
A former bartender at Henry Africa's, Harry Denton, however, is known for increasing the drink's popularity. Lemon drops became “the staple” of Harry Denton's Starlight Room in San Francisco, which reopened as “Starlite” in 2024.
Are Lemon Drops Common Enough to Order?
Multiple viewers said that a lemon drop should be a common enough cocktail to order at any bar. But is that really the case?
Many cocktail writers, while discussing other drinks, refer to lemon drops as a “classic drink.” Similarly, publications such as Paste have defended the cocktail, which, while not being an overly complex drink, still remains popular.
However, it's unclear if the drink is truly a bar staple. For experienced bartenders, it's a drink that's necessary to memorize. For a dive bartender, it may not even be worth knowing how to make. However, there's no specific rule that states bartenders should know how to make one cocktail or another.
It's safe to assume, though, that many bartenders can fulfill a lemon drop order. Sara wasn't that out of left field when she tried to order one—nor are her lemon-drop-loving commenters for requesting them.
