When you're married, you expect your partner to consistently consider your feelings, wants, and needs.

If your partner often shows you that this isn't the case, it may create resentment in the relationship. According to one woman on TikTok, it made her feel like her husband “hates [her].” Viewers agree.

In a TikTok video that has gone viral with over 5.9 million views, Zabe Gill (@zabegill85) shared the story of how one Saturday morning may have exposed something seriously wrong with their relationship.

What did her husband do?

In the storytime clip, Gill starts by explaining that she usually handles breakfast on the weekends.

“Every single weekend for the last… I don't know, years and years and years, I generally am the one that gets up the earliest on the weekend, and I cook breakfast for everybody,” she says. “Bacon, eggs, toast, omelets, pancakes, whatever it may be.”

She says weekend breakfast in their house is usually a little more involved than what they eat before school.

That morning, she recounts, one of her children woke up early and only wanted a snack and some milk. Her other child was still asleep.

Eventually, Gill's husband got up, but she was still tired.

“I went and laid down for a little bit,” she says. “Well, while I was laying down… he made breakfast for himself and the kids.”

He made French toast.

“I come out and I'm like, ‘Oh what did you make me?'” she says. “Nothing.”

Her feelings were hurt

“Not even a thought in his mind to be like, ‘Oh, I'm making breakfast. I should also include my wife,'” she says. “'Because every time she makes breakfast, she just does it for me without asking.'”

Gill says her husband's excuse was that he didn't think she liked French toast.

“That's just one of my favorite breakfasts ever,” she says. “I don't eat it often, but yeah, it's my favorite breakfast.”

Gill says she would have appreciated simply being asked.

“Even if I would have said ‘No, thank you,' I didn't even have that opportunity,” she says.

It exposed an imbalance in the household.

“I'm expected to ensure every single person is fed every single day in this house for every single meal,” she says. “And when it comes to me, yeah, she'll figure it out. She doesn't matter.”

Gill says her husband's inconsideration made her feel anxious and depressed.

“I get so much anxiety, and it's depressing that this is where I'm at in life,” she says.

She eventually settled for an English muffin as her breakfast.

“Whoop de do,” she says.

Viewers say the breakfast incident is sinister

Commenters thought the French toast revealed something seriously wrong.

“Every divorced woman remembers that exact moment when she could no longer be in denial about the obvious.” one commenter wrote.

“He would never get another meal from me,” another said.

“He doesn't hate you, he simply doesn't see you. And that's far worse,” a third wrote.

Another viewer thought her husband may have made a point by only cooking for himself and the children.

“Passive aggressive punishment for laying down when he was expecting breakfast,” they wrote.

Does this warrant divorce or separation?

One bad breakfast obviously isn't enough to end a marriage.

Important context would be whether this behavior is part of a pattern, and if she has attempted to address it in the past.

According to Idit Sharoni, a licensed marriage and family therapist, feelings of resentment can quickly grow in a relationship due to a lack of communication.

“It is a result of stifled, ineffective communication,” Sharoni theorizes.

If both parties are willing, however, Sharoni says that therapy and improved communication skills can save a couple from separation or divorce.
