A Texas woman told her server that a $25 glass of wine was missing from the bill.

Being a good Samaritan doesn't always guarantee that you'll be rewarded for it in some way.

That's what one woman learned after alerting a server at an Austin restaurant that they had undercharged her.

TikTok creator Lala (@lalainaustin), shocked by the experience at Driskill Grill in Austin, decided to ask her viewers if she did the right thing. Her clip got over 4,459 views and almost 150 comments.

What happened at this Austin restaurant?

Lala says she and her boyfriend went to Driskill Grill for a special event.

“It was my boyfriend's birthday, and we had a lovely time,” she says. “But the bill comes, and I'm paying the bill because it's his birthday.”

When she looked over the check, she noticed something missing.

“They had left off one of my glasses of wine that was $25,” she says. “And so, being the nice person I am, I tell the waiter.”

Lala expected the server to thank her for pointing it out and possibly let the missing charge slide.

“I'm thinking he's gonna be like, ‘Oh, you know what? My bad. Don't worry about it,'” she says. “And he's like, ‘Oh,' and he added it.”

That wasn't the outcome she had expected.

“I should have said nothing,” Lala says. “Like, what do you do in these situations?”

The dinner bill was around $300 before the extra $25 charge, according to Lala.

“Did I do the wrong thing by saying something, or did he do the wrong thing, or is that just the right thing to happen for me to pay the extra $25 on, like, a $300 bill?” she asks.

Viewers were split on whether she should have said anything

In the comments, some viewers thought Lala did the right thing, while others believed she should have gone along with the original bill.

“The positive karma will come back to you eventually,” one commenter wrote.

Another viewer said they probably would have kept quiet but compensated for it through the tip.

“I wouldn't have said anything, but I would have tipped an extra couple dollars,” they wrote. “I feel like that is a decent way to meet halfway. But also if I'm at a store and hand all items to a cashier and they miss one, free money for me. I leave and never look back.”

Others pointed out that once Lala told the server about the missing item, he may not have had much choice.

“Honestly, he probably could've gotten in trouble for not adding it once he knew,” one commenter wrote.

Would the missing glass of wine show up in inventory?

One glass of wine likely wouldn't alert staff to missing inventory. According to a blog post by Invintory, a wine inventory service, other causes would likely be considered first.

Things like sales rung up under the wrong item, a comp or spill that workers didn't log, or a misplaced bottle are common in restaurants that sell wine.

Pouring wine is also not an exact science. Bottles may have small amounts left over that go unaccounted for and can add up over time.
