A Texas woman says she took her dog on a walk in Austin. Then she says her dog accidentally consumed THC and EDDP, leading to an emergency vet visit.

How did a dog get high on an Austin walk?

Addison (@addisonmatheny392), an Austin-based student, says that she took her five-month-old puppy, Nova, out for her very first “public” walk. But Nova ended up “eating” or getting into something she wasn't supposed to.

The content creator tells her audience that Nova ended up getting high mid-walk. At the time that she posted, she had no idea what her dog ate and how she ended up being lethargic. Later, she says a veterinarian told her to call poison control for instructions, as the dog had consumed THC and EDDP.

‘Take your dog to the vet'

In the comments section, some viewers shared similar experiences.

“Hey so I took my dog to the off leash park one time in Austin and never again. She's ate [marijuana] off the ground in Austin TWICE now,” one commenter said.

Other commenters recommended the dog owner take her pet to the vet.

“Yeah immediately a vet visit babe. If you didn't see anything happen you have no clue. Change in behavior like this unexpectedly is like an emergency visit,” one viewer added.

What happened after the dog got high?

Addison gives her audience an update in a follow-up video.

“So they did a urine sample,” she says. “They had to put a catheter in because she would not stand and pee by herself. It tested positive for THC and EDDP. Yeah, EDDP.”

She says the clinic recommended she contact poison control. According to her, poison control recommended a treatment plan to the vet.

“The veterinarian, he was like, ‘Yeah, that seems pretty extensive and a lot, and it's gonna cost a lot,'” she says.

“ Probably spent around … $900 for taking my dog on a walk,” she says. “Let this be a PSA to anyone, anywhere that is doing drugs in a park or just in public: throw them away and don't just leave them on the sidewalk. I did not think it was gonna be this extreme.”

How lethal can THC and EDDP be for dogs?

While many cases of marijuana toxicity are treatable in dogs, it can be life-threatening if unaddressed.

Medvet says marijuana toxicity can be especially dangerous “If your dog has ingested a large amount of THC or has other health issues.”

EDDP, which is the primary metabolite of methadone, is harder to pin down when it comes to adverse effects for dogs. Methadone itself is commonly prescribed for drug dependency, although it's unclear where the EDDP came from or what made it appear on the drug test.

Both can pose adverse risks for animals. Depending on what Nova consumed, the situation could have been deadly. It's impossible, however, to ascertain how much the dog ate.
