An Uber driver discusses a strange ride on Halloween.

An Uber driver says she had an unsettling encounter while working on Halloween last year, and it wasn't someone dressed up in a scary costume.

@kk.stories1 recalls picking up a mysterious passenger just before midnight, only to become convinced that he might not have been alive in the first place.

As of this writing, her post has more than 700,000 views.

The Uber ride

@kk.stories1 explains that she was working as an Uber driver on Halloween.

She says she was waiting for one final ride before calling it a night. When a request came through, she drove five minutes to the pickup location and messaged the passenger to let him know she'd arrived.

After a few minutes passed, she says she saw “this man kind of, like, emerging from the darkness.” She didn't know where he came from.

His appearance caught her attention because he was wearing “a long black trench coat” along with “some older attire clothing,” says @kk.stories1. She adds that his outfit looked like “something that … our great grandfathers would have worn back in the day.”

The man got in the car, correctly verified his name, and the pair took off toward his destination, which was about 10 minutes away.

‘Do you normally do pickups around here?'

Halfway through the ride, and seemingly out of nowhere, she says he asked her: “Do you normally do pickups around here in this neighborhood?”

She explained that this depended on where the Uber app sent her. The next words out of his mouth were far more ominous. “You really shouldn't be out here this late,” he said to her, “especially when it's basically approaching midnight.”

Thinking he was joking, @kk.stories1 says she started giggling. The man did not laugh with her.

“He's dead serious, staring out the window,” she recalls, “and he goes, ‘no, it's just because a lot of people out here don't realize that they're already dead.'”

Understandably, she was taken aback. She says she looked back and asked him “wait, what you mean?”

“Never mind, that's okay. Just…just keep driving,” she says he replied.

The man disappears without a trace

When they finally reached the man's destination, @kk.stories1 says the man told her, “This is my house. Like, I live here, you know?”

She found the remark odd, but she complimented his home and told him good night.

She watched him walk up the stairs toward the front door. Then she briefly looked down at her phone to end the ride in the Uber app. She says that when she looked back up, he had disappeared without a trace.

“Like this man completely disappeared,” she stresses.

She couldn't understand how he'd gotten inside so fast.

“I should at least be able to still see you putting your key into the door … or the back of your trench coat or something. But he was gone,” she recalls.

She decides to look up the address

In a follow-up video, @kk.stories1 reveals what she says is proof that the man in the trench coat was a ghost. Unsettled by her ride with him, she says she decided to do some digging. She looked into the address where she had dropped him off.

She says she came across an old article about a man who had died inside the home years earlier. When she scrolled down to see a photograph, she immediately recognized him.

“The picture is the exact man who came and got in my car last night as the Uber passenger,” she recalls.

She admits she has no idea who paid for the Uber ride. But her finding gave her a new perspective on his eerie warning regarding people who don't realize they're dead.

“He was talking about him,” she concludes, adding that she is grateful he had been a friendly spirit. “So learn from me,” she says. “Not all money is good money.”

‘He came to keep you safe'

Viewers weighed in on @kk.stories1's video, many of them offering explanations for the man's presence. “He protected you from another passenger that probably would've hurt you,” wrote one commenter. A second agreed: “He just came to keep you safe and warn you … It sounds like he knew he'd passed.”

Another posed an uncomfortable question: “What if YOU'RE the crazy one & nobody was ever in your car?”

One user simply wrote, “I would go back to that house and knock on the door … Ask if that man lives there just to officially debunk it.”

Another had a different sort of explanation. “That's because Halloween is literally the only day the Dead can walk among us,” they said. “Thought y'all knew that.”

Why is Halloween associated with ghosts?

Actually, this last commenter isn't wrong. The fact that @kk.stories1's tale allegedly took place on Halloween makes the story more fitting.

Halloween's origins are commonly traced to Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival that marked the end of harvest season and beginning of winter.

According to History.com, the Celts believed that on Oct. 31 every year, “the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred.”

As University of Southern California anthropology professor Tok Thompson notes, the idea of the dead crossing into the world of the living is “one of the oldest surviving traditions,” deeply embedded in Halloween's history.

The psychology behind ghost sightings

Psychology offers a different explanation, one rooted more in the world of the living than the dead.

Scientists have spent years studying why people believe they saw a ghost. The answer, it seems, may have to do with how our brains process information. A 2018 study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology found a relationship between illusory pattern perception—seeing meaningful connections or patterns in random or unrelated events—and a belief in conspiracies and the supernatural.

Basically, people who were more likely to see patterns in unrelated information were also more likely to believe in ghosts.

Once perceived, this bias is strengthened by a confirmation bias. “Believers selectively seek out information that aligns with their perceived connections while disregarding evidence to the contrary,” the study says.

Meaning, people who believe in ghosts are more likely to interpret events in a way that keeps them believing in ghosts.

Another phenomenon is “illusory agency detection.” Many people tend to assign a greater purpose or intelligence to random or natural stimuli. A 2013 study in Consciousness and Cognition found that people who believed in the paranormal were more likely than skeptics to incorrectly see human movement in a light display.

These studies don't mean that everyone who sees a ghost is imagining things; they merely suggest that our perceptions and expectations influence our interpretation of events that our minds cannot instantly explain.

@kk.stories1's passenger disappearing in seconds might not have triggered an alarm on its own, but paired with the date (Halloween), his old-timey clothing, his ominous remarks about dead people, and the photograph in the old article, it isn't difficult to see how she connected the dots to paint “ghost.”

Ghost or not, he only gets the “friendly” qualifier if he left a five-star rating.
