With the US midterm election on November 3, both parties are in full swing, with prospective Senators holding rallies every day. Currently, Donald Trump's Republicans control both the House and the Senate, but with Trump's approval rating tanking and an increasing number of Republicans feeling disenfranchised by Trump's ‘America Last' politics, there are a significant number of incumbent Republican Senators whose seats are in jeopardy. In order for Democrats to gain control of the House and Senate, they will have to flip three seats in the House and four in the Senate. Today we'll look at three Democratic candidates who are giving the Democrats a shot, and how they're using Trump's ‘honest' style against him.
Jon Ossoff (D-GA)

Jon Ossoff is actually the incumbent Senator in Georgia, but the battleground state will be a key part of the Democrats' bid to control the Senate. Jon Ossoff is facing off against one of US politics' most extreme politicians: Mike Collins. Collins has been an elected representative for the state of Georgia since 2022, and his tenure in politics has been marred by statements and connections to far-right nationalist groups. Collins has openly denied the result of the 2020 U.S. federal election, claiming it was stolen by Joe Biden and the democrats, and featured in a campaign ad that showed him shooting a voting machine.
Mike Collins has brought dishonour to our state through his personal bigotry and his widely documented ties to white nationalists,

Collins also got into hot water regarding multiple members of his campaign team. In October 2026, investigations found that two of Collins' senior campaign staff were directly tied to an organization founded by members of the Ku Klux Klan. According to a representative for Collins' campaign, the staff members' history was not known to Collins. If the allegations of racism and demonizing comments about immigrants are not enough, Collins is also a staunch climate-change denier and is so staunchly anti-abortion that Donald Trump warned him to pull back on his position.
For Jon Ossoff, he's not taking a page out of Biden or Harris' book; he's taking from the Republicans. Ossoff is leaning into Collins' impressive list of controversies. While Democrats have made a habit of pulling their punches, Ossoff is doing the opposite, and it seems to be working. In front of impressive crowds at his rallies, Jon Ossoff has been clearly outlining every disgusting thing Mike Collins has done in his six years of service to the US public, and it's working. Less than a week out from the election, Ossoff leads the opposition by 10 points.

James Talarico (D-TX)

In Texas, Democratic nominee James Talarico is in the midst of one of the most significant campaigns in Texas' history. The last time Texas elected a Democratic Senator was in 1993, when Bob Krueger was elected and served for just seven months before losing a special election. James Talarico is facing Ken Paxton, a former US representative. Paxton was first elected in 2003 and served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 2003 to 2013. Paxton represented the eighth district in the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2015 but was impeached in 2023. Paxton has a long history of legal issues, including multiple investigations into securities fraud. Paxton claims he is an ‘ultraconservative ' and is a staunch supporter of Donald Trump.
I honestly get the sense that people across the spectrum, across the state, are tired of this politics as professional wrestling, right? You got these old guys lathered up in their fake tan, throwing corny nicknames at each other,

James Talarico has served in the Texas House of Representatives since 2018. Talarico is an ex-elementary school teacher and an active member of the presbyterian church. Talarico has been leaning on his Christian faith to win over voters, painting Paxton as a non-religious candidate, something that plays well in Texas. Talarico has called out Paxton on his decades of financial fraud and has used the fact that Paxton is not a Texan as talking points for his campaign. Currently, Talarico has a six-point lead on Paxton, and has earned the vote of many hardline conservatives by using strategies that Donald Trump did in 2016: perceived honesty. Talarico has not minced words about Paxton, nor has he shied away from using his faith as a bargaining chip.
Ken Paxton is everything that's wrong with our politics. He doesn't serve us; he serves himself. Since taking office, Ken Paxton has increased his net worth by $27 million, all while our pay has remained stagnant. He now owns 15 homes, while most Texans are struggling to afford one. It's hard to get 15 homes in a game of Monopoly. I don't know how Ken Paxton got 15 homes. He was impeached by his own party for taking bribes from wealthy donors, all while he blocked our overtime pay and gutted our healthcare. This is the rot at the core of our broken political system.

Abdul El-Sayed (D-MI)

In Michigan, one of the most interesting races is taking shape, with Abdul El-Sayed leading his opponent, Mike Rogers, by five points. Michigan currently has two Democratic Senators, but just two months ago the state was projected to sweep Republican. Since then, Abdul El-Sayed has gone on one of the most impressive campaigns in recent memory. El-Sayed is a Michigan native and a Muslim American. El-Sayed has faced racism and discrimination from Donald Trump and his MAGA gang since he won the Democratic nomination, and El-Sayed has flipped that negative attention right back on the perpetrators.
Because he was a nepo baby, because he had resources, realized quickly that he just craved for attention and then used the bullying tactics that he uses right now to get it. But the man is an idiot, I mean, just when it comes down to it, like, just a fool.

Instead of taking the high road or denying the racism from the right, El-Sayed has embraced it. Often compared to New York mayor Zoran Mamdani, El-Sayed takes the opposite approach to the mayor. El-Sayed is more than willing to attack Donald Trump and his opposition in Mike Rogers on a number of issues. El-Sayed recently called out Trump for not receiving enough attention from his father after Trump made racist comments about El-Sayed's mother, claiming that because of Trump Sr.'s poor parenting, America is now suffering. El-Sayed has also made multiple comments about JD Vance, most recently calling the Vice President weak and pathetic.
JD Vance is a smart person but he has no actual soul and he has no actual charisma and so his thing is just to suck up to the strongest person in the room to do their bidding.”
