Five European governments have accused Russia of killing opposition leader Alexei Navalny with a lethal toxin derived from South American poison dart frogs, escalating international pressure two years after his death in a Russian penal colony.

The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands said laboratory analyses of samples from Navalny “conclusively confirmed” the presence of epibatidine, a highly toxic substance they argue could only have been administered while he was in state custody.

The countries rejected Moscow’s claim that Navalny died of natural causes, stating Russia had the “means, motive and opportunity” to poison him. Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, welcomed the findings, saying: «Putin killed him,» and calling the evidence long-awaited certainty.
