Gennady Lopyrev, a general once very close to Vladimir Putin, perhaps a little too close, seems to have paid a great price for this privileged relationship. Experts believe that he had a lot of information on Putin's secret projects, including his infamous billion dollars palace. He died suddenly suffocating in prison. He had been relieved of his duties and imprisoned in 2017 in a corruption case, charges he had always denied. Russia claims that Gennady Lopyrev was actually suffering from a previously undiagnosed illness. He was 69.
