A former bartender posted a confession that has her commenters reeling. The reason why? According to her, the “skinny” margaritas they served at their bar were just regular margaritas—no skinny changes or substitutions.
TikToker Vic (@vic_digs) made the confession in a video with more than 825,000 views. But are skinny margaritas a scam? Or did her bar skip actually skip the “skinnification” of the drink?
Are Skinny Margs a Scam?
While Vic said that there wasn't a comparable difference between regular margaritas and skinny margaritas at her particular bar, her commenters vehemently disagreed. They said that there was a comparable difference in how bars should make regular margaritas and skinny ones.
“I'm a bartender. Skinny margs are a thing. I take pride in making my drinks correctly. Hope this helps,” one commenter said.
Another commenter said, “always asked me what they wanted me to do to make the marg ‘skinny' bc they have no clue what a ‘skinny' marg actually is because it is nothing. bethany frankel you are my enemy,” in reference to the skinny margarita's creator.
Another commenter said, “it's less sugar and we were taught to make skinny margs at my old work! HUGE difference for people who watch sugars with diabetes.” Vic replied and said, “Yes no sour mix (which is highly sweetened!) a proper margarita won't need to be made ‘skinny' it already is!”
Are Skinny Margs Real?
Vic's video stirred controversy, but it didn't seem to be because her bar was deliberately duping customers. Rather, Vic argued that a traditional margarita is skinny by default. This is generally true. Most margaritas contain the same ingredients; tequila, lime juice, and triple sec or contrinaeu.
According to leading cocktail experts, many customers don't even know what a skinny margarita is or how close it is to a regular margarita. Janice Bailon, the lead bartender at Brooklyn Leyenda, said customers asked for skinny margs with club soda and tequila. The creator of the skinny marg herself orders a skinny marg with all of the traditional ingredients in a regular margarita—no skinny fixings or substitutions.
So what's skinny about a skinny margarita? In reality, nothing specifically is. Some bartenders may say a skinny margarita doesn't contain sour mix, or that it skips syrups or other add-ins. Most skinny margarita recipes, however, contain the same simple ingredients that make a margarita a margarita. They may sub-in certain ingredients and include things such as orange extract or artificial sweeteners, but they're not necessarily supposed to differ from the regular recipe.
