Traumatizing seems like too shallow a word to explain how it must feel to be buried alive. You spend your last moments feeling claustrophobic, combined with the impending doom of taking your last breath while already six feet under. I shudder and have difficulty breathing just thinking about it (totally not manifesting it at all)! As it turns out, people from centuries before were so scared of this happening that they actually built escape hatches into their own caskets. Here’s how safety coffins came to be and the fear that created them.
