Death Row Prisoner Survives Two Lethal Injection Doses as Tennessee Investigates Botched Execution

Tennessee’s attempt to execute Christa Pike took an extraordinary turn when she remained alive after receiving two doses of pentobarbital. Instead of becoming the state’s first woman executed in more than 200 years, Pike was transported from the execution chamber to a hospital. Governor Bill Lee has since halted Tennessee’s remaining execution of 2026 and ordered an independent investigation into how the lethal-injection procedure failed.
