‘Elvis’: Austin Butler lost his mother at the same age as Elvis Presley

The main star of Elvis was surprised by some coincidences between his character’s life and his own.

Austin Butler said he was shocked to learn that Elvis Presley, whom he plays in Elvis, had lost his mother at the age of 23, just like him.

“His mother passed away when he was 23, and my mum passed away when I was 23, so when I learned that, it was one of those things where I got chills, and I just thought: Okay, I can connect to that.” Butler explains to GQ.

Elvis, by Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo+Juliet, etc) and starring, in addition to Austin Butler, Tom Hanks and Olivia DeJonge, opens in theaters on June 24.

The film has received mixed reviews, but has been unanimously praised by Presley’s family.
