A Miami dog bakery posted a video of a crying Chihuahua that's gone viral. Now, people are wondering why the tiny pooch was sobbing so intensely.

Pawkery Miami (@pawkerymiami), a dog bakery, posted a video that received more than 28.9 million views. In it, a Chihuahua—either visibly happy or devastated—appears to cry as a crowd sings it happy birthday.

For most, the post was just regular feel-good content. A cute Chihuahua dressed as a pumpkin easily impresses. But other viewers had questions. Was the Chihuahua actually “emotional,” or was it all a ruse?

‘In His Language and Everything'

Viewers in the comment section joked about the video, especially given the fact that the people in it—who were off camera—sang to the Chihuahua in its “own language.”

As the Chihuahua began “weeping,” singers gave their happy birthday wishes in pseudo-dog speak, “woofing” in a way that most commenters found hilarious.

“What if you're speaking the wrong words in his language … What if you're actually threatening his entire family to the tune of Happy Birthday??” one commenter asked.

Another viewer said, “Probably cussed him out and wished death upon him in his language.”

Other commenters, however, said that the dog must have been upset it couldn't eat its birthday cake in peace.

“He crying cause he wanna hurry up and eat his cake and yall playing in his face,” a viewer said.

Do Dogs Actually Cry Because They're Emotional?

In reality, it's unlikely the Chihuahua was crying for any specific reason. There's not much evidence to conclude that dogs get emotional the same way people do. Instead, tears and tear ducts exist for a functional purpose: to clear out a dog's vision.

However, there is a small amount of research that has tried to dig deeper into dogs' under-eye moisture. A team in Japan found a 10% increase in tear volume when dogs greeted their owners, per ScienceAlert. The researchers found that greater amounts of oxytocin, a hormone commonly associated with love, appeared to increase tear production.

That study, however, was notably small. In addition, other experts in the field who spoke to the New York Times were admittedly skeptical of its findings, citing issues with how it was conducted and the study's smaller scale.

But it doesn't rule out the idea that a dog's tears may have a non-functional purpose. Dr. Daniel Mills, a veterinary behavioral medicine specialist who spoke to the New York Times, said that tears may play a role in human-dog bonding.

“It might be that things like a more glossy eye or the presence of tears do encourage nurturing tendencies in us,” Dr. Mills said.
