Going to the gym is often a stress reliever. But for one woman, it ended up causing more stress than relaxation.

Marilyn (@marixorell) posted a now-removed video that received more than 139,000 views. In it, she told her audience about a disastrous visit to a Crunch Fitness location in Maitland, Florida, which resulted in her considering other gyms entirely. That's because, according to her, a general manager banned a guest she invited to the gym for “no reason.”

Prior to the altercation, she said the general manager was using Meta glasses to record conversations with guests. She also alleged that other women had hostile encounters with the manager.

What happened at this Crunch Fitness?

Marilyn said she invited her friend to join her at her gym, Crunch Fitness, on a guest pass. The experience went well; she told her audience that the staff was friendly and the facilities were clean. So she and her friend made a plan to use another guest pass on Labor Day.

Marilyn said that while there, she met the general manager for the first time. According to her, he “wasn't the friendliest” to her or to her friend.

He was kind of sassy when we got there. I mean, he was kinda sassy with me. He didn't wanna, like, bring up my membership,” she said. “ He would say, like, ‘It's not pulling up.'”

As they tried to get into the gym, Marilyn's friend noticed the general manager was using Meta glasses and reportedly recording during work. Her friend asked why; the general manager allegedly responded by saying that recording was his “protection.”

Marilyn and her friend discussed the general manager's Meta glasses usage after their workout.

“We were still talking about it, me and my friend, and she was venting to me about the situation and how wrong it is to have Meta glasses in the gym, especially as a general manager.”

According to her, other women heard their conversation. They apparently said that the general manager is “not a good person.” They all allegedly had “really bad experiences with him.”

The husband confronts the general manager

Marilyn's friend told her husband about the encounter. Later, when he went to pick up his driver's license, he approached the general manager “calmly” and tried to discuss the conversation he had with his wife.

“He's like, ‘Hey, you know, what happened with my wife earlier?' The general manager then responded, saying, ‘Do you wanna get bonk with me?'  Like, do you wanna fight?” she recalls.

The husband was caught off guard. He confirmed that he didn't want to fight the general manager. Then he asked the general if he could have his ID back.

Then the general manager gave him some frustrating news. Apparently, he couldn't find the husband's ID anywhere.

Another employee jumped in to try to help find the driver's license, but the general manager allegedly yelled at them.

The situation escalated.

“At this point, my friend's husband's getting frustrated, and he's like, ‘You need to give me my ID back,'”  Marilyn said. “The GM threatens to call the cops on my friend's husband and threatens to ban him.”

Marilyn said the general manager did ban her friend's husband, which frustrated her. She told the general manager that his actions were disproportionate.

“ I told him this is really embarrassing, as a member, to bring a guest here and for you to give them this service of banning them, threatening to call in the cops, to take away their driver's license, and also to try to fight them,” she said.

The general manager continues the tirade

At that point, two women approached the front desk with membership questions. The general manager allegedly screamed at them.

“ They were having a membership issue earlier that day, and they wanted to approach him about the same issue they were having,” she said. “He then tells these girls, who look like they're 22 [or] 23 years old, to get the F out of his face, verbatim, and [calls] them the B word.”

She pointed out that the entire encounter was unprofessional. She was embarrassed to bring her friends to the gym with her. Since then, she's been looking at new gyms in Orlando, Florida.

People criticize the manager

In Marilyn's comment section, viewers said that a general manager wearing metal glasses at work wasn't appropriate.

“This ‘g' needs to be fired, yesterday!!! Not only with his crazy UNPROFESSIONALISM, but also recording people working out without their consent, and sensitive info!!!! Heeellll nah he's gotta go!” a commenter said.

Another viewer said, “Meta glasses in the gym is just predatory . Ewwwww . What is he doing with that footage after?”

Others shared reportedly hostile encounters they reportedly had with the general manager, with one of the women Marilyn met that day chiming in.

“I met you guys in the locker room/sauna and told you about my friend's situation,” a viewer said, addressing Marilyn. “I went to [him] to ask questions about my membership. During the conversation, I asked why he was wearing Meta glasses. He said they were for ‘outreach' and his protection, so I pointed out he was literally standing behind the front desk. That's when he became extremely hostile and started screaming, ‘get out of MY facility' and ‘get the eff out of my face' like a broken record.”

“OMG TY FOR TALKING ABOUT THIS!!! … THE GM WAS SO RUDE TO ME AND MY BF FOR NO REASON!!!” a commenter added.

What's Crunch Fitness' Recording Policy?

Some Crunch Fitness locations reportedly allow individuals to film themselves, as long as they're not recording in private areas such as changing rooms. Marilyn, however, stated her location had a strict no-recording policy in its contract.

Additionally, Florida is a two-party consent state, or “all-party” consent state. That means that all recorded parties have to consent to participating when a conversation is recorded. An individual using smart glasses at a gym, then, wouldn't reasonably be able to publish recorded conversations unless they have permission to do so from the person they're recording. If they recorded video only, the rule would not apply.

It's unclear exactly why the general manager reportedly uses Meta glasses at work, but multiple commenters said it made them uncomfortable. Several viewers shared that they would not be visiting the Maitland, Florida location after hearing about Marilyn and her friend's experience.
