Florida woman goes to Publix. Then she sees something shocking in the ice cream aisle: ‘Kinda kills the ice cream game’
Publix remains a fan-favorite grocery store. Besides helpful employees, an immaculate interior, and delicious deli and bakery items, there is a specific treat customers seem to crave: Ice cream.
Because of the company's dedication, it has created a variety of decadent flavors to appeal to a wide range of taste buds. As one woman recently learned, this also applies to those with dietary sensitivities.
What Did She Find At Publix?
In a 22-second clip, Florida TikTok creator Kaila (@snacklikeachamp) stands in front of the ice cream freezer at Publix.
“Maybe I've been living under a rock, but I did not know Publix has a full line of lactose-free ice cream,” she says, referring to the bottom row of lactose-free flavors. “These sound so good.”
Then, she lists the flavors she spotted. “We got a classic vanilla, a pineapple banana, and this one.” But there is one that stood out to her. “Sounds the best to me. It's chocolate peanut butter pretzel. So delicious.”
The content creator shouts out the supermarket chain and tags them in the caption, “@Publix kinda kills the ice cream game.”
When Did Publix Release Lactose-Free Ice Cream?
However, the lactose-free flavors have been around for quite some time. In 2023, the supermarket chain announced this drop on Facebook. From there, they dabbled with other flavors, and in 2025, they released four quarter-sized flavors available year-round. Currently, the six options to choose from are: Chocolate, Vanilla, Caramel Toffee, Cookies n' Cream, Pineapple Banana, and Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzel.
In addition to the Publix brand, the company offers other lactose-free brand options, most notably Lactaid in Salted Caramel, Vanilla, Cookies, Peanut Butter, and Chocolate and Breyers in Vanilla.
Why Do People Choose Lactose-Free Ice Cream?
Unlike dairy-free or vegan ice cream, lactose-free ice cream still contains the classic milk and cream ingredients, minus the lactose. So, this alternative is primarily geared toward lactose-intolerant people who still want to enjoy this dessert without triggering digestive pain. The best of both worlds, if you will. Those with this digestive condition have trouble digesting lactose, a sugar molecule in dairy products.
Despite dairy being extremely popular in the United States, lactose intolerance isn't uncommon. According to Cleveland Clinic, 65% of adults can't break down or absorb this molecule.
So, what causes this? It has to do with not having enough lactase enzymes in the digestive system. When food with lactose enters the small intestine, lactase enzymes digest lactose and absorb the nutrients into the bloodstream, Harvard Health states. However, the outlet explains that when the body lacks lactase, the sugars travel to the large intestine (the colon), and bacteria break down some, producing gas in the process while simultaneously bringing water into the colon. As a result, this creates abdominal cramps, diarrhea, gas, and bloating.
