A woman says she and her friends made an unsettling discovery after opening what they thought was a closet inside their Airbnb.
Tivona (@teatinz), a Paris-based content creator, shared a moment from a recent vacation after she says the group stumbled upon a hidden room they hadn't expected.
What Happened With This Airbnb?
“When my friends open a ‘closet' in the Airbnb, but the saxophones keep getting louder,” she wrote in the text overlay of her video.
Inside the small room was a white chair that appeared heavily stained brown. A white towel on the floor beneath where someone's feet would rest while sitting in the chair also appeared discolored.
The video doesn't explain what the room was used for, and according to Airbnb, Tivona did not contact them about what she found.
“So, yeah,” she wrote in the caption.
As of Wednesday, the video had more than 196,500 views.
In an email to Subplot News, an Airbnb spokesperson shared the following statement:
“The listing profile describes the home and guests agree: the listing has a five-star rating from past guests, including five out of five stars for accuracy, and is a Guest Favorite. The guest shared in another post that they had a positive stay, which we're glad to hear. If a guest does ever have a concern, our 24/7 Customer Support team is always available to help.”
What Should You Do If Something Feels Off?
The video doesn't explain what the room was used for, and there's no indication that anything illegal or unsafe took place. But if guests encounter something in a rental that makes them uncomfortable, Airbnb encourages them to document it and contact the host or the company through the app.
Airbnb's policies also require that those posting listings accurately describe the space that guests are renting. If a part of the property is off-limits or inaccessible, hosts are expected to disclose that so guests know what to expect before they arrive.
If a guest believes there's a health, safety, or cleanliness issue—or that the listing doesn't match its description—they can report it through Airbnb's Resolution Center or customer support. Depending on the situation, Airbnb may work with the host to resolve the issue.
Airbnb also tightened its privacy rules in 2024 by banning indoor security cameras in listings worldwide, saying guests should be able to expect privacy inside the homes they rent. Outdoor cameras are still allowed in some cases, but hosts must disclose them in advance.
In Tivona's case, Airbnb maintains that she never asked the host about the room or reported it to Airbnb. The video ends before explaining what, if anything, happened next.
Viewers Want Answers
Many viewers were just as confused as Tivona, with several trying to figure out what exactly they were looking at.
“Oh my God, what is that?” one commenter wrote.
“WHAT IS THAT?” another echoed.
“Is it a…. what is it?!” a third asked.
Some viewers floated their own theories.
“Pls is that the loo?” one person wrote.
“Toilet?” another wondered.
“Viewing room perhaps!! WTF,” a third commented.
Others said they would have left the rental altogether.
“Get out!!!!!!!!! Leave!!!!!!!!!!! Right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!” one viewer wrote.
“Ewwww, that's so nasty,” another added.
A few commenters also said the room made them think about privacy.
“Did you check for hidden cameras. I wouldn't even take a shower fully nude in that joint,” one person wrote.
Another commented, “That camera has an IP address. Which is hackable. Which means that there are videos of that bedroom on the internet.”
