Golfer catches the reality of what it’s like being a Florida bev cart girl during rain delays: ‘I hated the gut lean so much’

There's nothing quite like a sport that leaves its players at the mercy of the weather. In golf, rain delays yield dozens of bored golfers with nowhere to go. Sometimes, one much-put-upon cart worker gets stuck as the de facto entertainment.

One golfer's video of this dynamic playing out is going viral.

‘Now we got her from both sides. Nowhere to go'

Content creator Cameron Ganci (@ganci6c) shared a video showing just how uncomfortable the aforementioned dynamic can look. In his rain delay footage, roughly half a dozen male golfers surrounded a female beverage cart attendant at the PGA National Resort in Florida. His video has since accumulated more than 250,000 views.

Ganci's video begins with him filming the cart attendant, surrounded by half a dozen male golfers. Due to the rain, they all appeared to be standing close to and around her as they spoke to her. He narrated over the footage.

“Oh, she's gotta hate the rain delays,” Ganci said. “Are you kidding me? She's getting killed. “

Ganci's video then cut to one golfer leaning into her cart, fingers hooked over the top edge, his midsection pressed into the side. A second man joined him on the opposite side of the cart.

“Get a load of this guy, dude,” Ganci said. “He's giving her entire gut; she's got [a] full gut in the cart. Yeah, now we got her from both sides. Nowhere to go.”

Cart attendants in Ganci's comments sympathize

The video struck a nerve with current and former beverage cart attendants in the comment section of Ganci's video. Many viewers derided “golf bros,” and one commenter simply wrote, “As a former cart girl, I hated the gut lean so much.”

“My daughter was a cart girl for a while,” a viewer wrote. “Little secret guys: they laugh at you when you walk away. I mean hysterically.”

One self-described former cart girl from the Silverado Country Club in Napa, California, wrote that tips were often just “$1, $5 at best $10 – quite often no tip.” She added, “I wanted $20 for all the gawking, foul conversation, and [harassment] all while I stayed so kind with the prettiest smile.”

“I was a golf cart girl when I was young,” another commenter wrote. “Took me 3 weeks to be like ‘I don't love money enough for this'. I was making 5x what my last job paid, and still nah, no thanks. These men are insufferable.”

One service industry veteran expressed sympathy for the woman in Ganci's video.

“I worked in the service industry for years (bartender, model, dancer, hostess, etc.) and when I tell you… she is performing for her life rn,” she wrote. “I guarantee she hates every single one of them.”

Is this a common experience for women working on golf courses?

Beverage cart attendants drive stocked golf carts around golf courses. They sell drinks and snacks directly to golfers as they play. While the pay can be lucrative, with some women raking in “shocking” tips, the money sometimes comes bundled with harassment.

Business Insider reported in 2021 that cart attendants deal “with creepy men and unwanted advances.” Multiple attendants told Business Insider about men making inappropriate comments about their bodies, with one saying, “I feel like guys have a tendency to [intimately] objectify cart girls.”

Entrepreneur also reported in 2022 that “customers can get handsy” with cart attendants. One “cart girl” said she had to physically defend herself from one golf customer.

“There was once a man who grabbed me — but he made a mistake because I'm trained in MMA,” she said. “I dislocated his thumb, and he said he was going to tell my boss. I told him to go ahead.”

In some cases, this kind of harassment has escalated into formal legal claims. In January 2023, a former Old Ranch Country Club beverage cart attendant filed a lawsuit against the club. She sought more than $15 million, alleging in court documents that wealthy club members repeatedly physically violated and propositioned her.

Yahoo News reports that “she claimed when she approached management about the harassment, their response implied club members ‘pay enough' to do ‘as they wish.'”
