‘It is so cute’: Women see a baby bear on a Jeep. Then they realize the car is occupied

A Tennessee mountain getaway turned into a wildlife standoff for TikToker Sarah (@xoxo_sarah.michelle), who says she pulled up to her Gatlinburg-area rental to find a black bear cub scaling her Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The cute factor evaporated fast. There was, it turned out, a second bear—a much bigger one—locked inside the car. The clip has since drawn more than 1.6 million views.

Why Was A Bear Cub Climbing The Jeep?

At first, Sarah read the scene as harmless, even charming.

“It is so cute,” she says in the clip, then a swiftly deduced possibility comes to mind. “I wonder if the mom is inside.”

The question answered itself. As the cub clambered across the hood and roof and pawed near a window, the family realized the SUV's interior was already occupied.

“That's a bear,” someone said, the disbelief compounding. “In the [expletive] car.”

They weighed their limited options aloud—”Do we call 911?”—worried the trapped animal would overheat in the summer sun. Then came the scramble to clear the driveway so it could bolt: “These people need to move.”

Eventually, the clip skipped forward, showing the Jeep's rear liftgate open. The mama bear spilled out, with cub not far behind. Both strode toward the treeline. Sarah also shared other angles.

People Made Jokes

“Nah my dumba– would try the door and run for it,” claimed one person.

“If you see cubs, mama bear is approximately 1 cm away,” said another person.

One of the best comments compared the mama bear to a human mom: “I think the mom just needed 15min to herself. She just got home from work, and she needed a little bit of peace and quiet before going in the house.”

Some just wanted to rub a baby bear's belly. “My delusional a– would be like, ‘let me go hold the baby and just open the door for the mom real quick',” said one commenter.

How Common Is It To Come Across Bears In Gatlinburg?

Sarah's ordeal is pretty much a Gatlinburg rite of passage. Bears in the Great Smoky Mountains know that open car doors and coolers mean calories, and the aftermath is routinely destructive—and, from a safe distance, occasionally comic.

In one widely covered case, Haley Gray and her husband returned to their Gatlinburg vehicle to find a mother and three cubs inside, despite having it professionally detailed beforehand to erase any trace of food. Gray told WKRN the responding officer offered little backup: “When the police officer got there, he just kind of chuckled,” she said.

State officials say the pattern is grimly familiar. After a bear forced open a truck door and shredded the interior trying to escape, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency warned that “Thieves are the least of your worries with hungry bears roaming around.”
