Las Vegas man goes to AMC movie theater and buys $8 soda. Then the soda fountain asks him for a password

Going to the movie theater is a low-effort, exciting break away from reality. You load up on snacks, popcorn, and drinks and embark on a sensory journey through a movie screen.

But as technology advances, sometimes there is an annoying occurrence serving as a reminder of why we stopped there in the first place. What one AMC customer encountered at the soda dispensary machine made this ordinary activity come to a screeching halt.

But is it really all that out of the blue?

What's up with the AMC Theatres soda machine?

“Yo, check this sh– out, y'all,” TikTok creator Josh (@tealhub1) says, approaching a soda machine inside the AMC Town Square 18 in Las Vegas. “How are they gonna charge me $8 for a cup.”

When he turns the camera, it reveals to more than 208,000 viewers the soda machine screen with a password to unlock it.

“I gotta put a password to get my d– soda? This is some bu–sh–, AMC. I swear to god,” he says.

The content creator remarks in the caption, “I just wanna watch Resident Evil.”

What did viewers think?

Like Josh, viewers were less than thrilled to see a password entry on a soda machine.

“Wtf i ain't never seen that before,” one viewer commented.

“Tf is this bull. Ah h– nah. That's why I rarely go to amc,” another said.

“They promised us flying cars but instead we got password protected soda machines,” a third stated

“It cost them 12 cents to make the soda,” a fourth remarked.

Why does the PIN exist?

As technology advances, so do other aspects of life, including something as innocuous as soda machines. This one in particular is a Coke Soda Freestyle, which launched in 2009 and is available at thousands of businesses. Customers can choose from hundreds of flavors to customize their own drinks at the tip of their fingers, and with the Freestyle Equinox user interface rolled out, the creative drink concoctions are endless.

Similar to how customers have access to different options, management can easily restrict them for any reason. Depending on the model, each dispenser has a “lock mode,” or a “manager lock mode,” where workers or the manager manually enter or set a timer to turn it off. In the 9100 dispenser user guide, it is specifically to “prevent drinks from being poured without having to manually power off the unit.” 

In this case, viewers believed the machine Josh attempted to use was shut down for maintenance.

“The password is meant for when the machine is under maintenance or it needs to be worked on, they usually use the location number or building number,” one commenter explained.

“That only happens when they are [about] to close. There is always 1 machine available,” a second elaborated.
