Gas stations have profound “liminal space” energy. People from all walks of life unite in these asphalt rest stops, stand near one another in silence as they watch their gas charges climb. But every now and then, something goes down that's more interesting than a looming dollar amount.
One content creator said his fill-up at a Chevron came with a front-row seat to someone else's “trouble in paradise.”
‘A Lady Pulls Up in Front of You'
A content creator (@theguywith_noplan) shares footage from a Chevron gas station. His video has since accumulated more than 800 views.
The creator's video begins with him filming the gas kiosk. He shows that he was due to pay more than $100 for his tank of gas. Then he pans his camera around to the truck next to him.
“When you're at the diesel pump getting diesel and then a lady pulls up in front of you, comes to the truck next to you and says, ‘throw my wedding ring away,'” he says.
He then reveals a handwritten note stuck to the truck's driver's side door that carries the wedding ring message.
“You never know what you'll see on the road,” the creator writes in the caption. He also tags the video “#troubleinparadise.”
Is This the First Time a Couple's Trouble Has Played Out at a Gas Station?
Gas stations have a storied history as the backdrop for couples' mishaps. In 2013, NPR's “Morning Edition” reported on a German newlywed who stopped to refuel while driving home from his honeymoon in France. He drove off, assuming his wife was asleep in the back seat. She had actually gotten out to use the restroom.
Jalopnik said that he had traveled about 125 miles before he wondered where she was. He collected her five hours after leaving.
“She couldn't call him as, you know, she just got married and wedding gowns don't exactly have pockets for cell phones or anything,” Jalopnik wrote. “When he realized his wife was missing he called the police to file a report, because apparently he thought someone had stolen her from the car somewhere in his two-hour solitary highway jaunt.”
Motherly reported on a viral TikTok of a “dad [capturing his] wife giving birth at a gas station.”
“Kaitlyn Fullerton Mancera says she thought she was experiencing either Braxton Hicks contractions or a need to use the bathroom while riding in the car,” Motherly wrote. “Her husband, Sergio Mancera, pulled into a gas station to accommodate his wife … Kaitlyn says she began to feel contractions right there in the bathroom stall.”
